Hmm, I thought my PM was 1st for question #2, but I guess I got too chatty with it. So here's my best guess for #1. Copied from a cool website on proto synths: http://www.obsolete.com/120_years The Variophone (1932) "Developed in the Soviet Union in 1932 by Yevgeny Alexandrovitch Sholpo, the Varioph...

IThe wimpy meter itself may be sticking/defective, or the meter driver amp (typiclaly an opamp chip) might have gone south. The trims are *above* each meter, but your explanation makes sense. The meter responds quickly, but within a limited range. So it seems more likely to be a chip than some sort...

Wimpy VU meter in Tascam M-208

I just bought a Tascam M-208 mixer (on eBay for $25, local, no shipping!) Hard to pass up at that price -- rack ears, colored knobs and all. It works perfectly except that one of the VU meters is wimpy, not bouncing full-scale. Adjusting the calibration trim through the front panel affects it...

Just a quick shout from a greater-LA TapeOpper (composer/producer/blahblahblah). I'd like to hear about any hookups -- beers, whatever -- especially if there are other folks on the westside. With gas prices as they are, "The Southland" is turning back into a number of small isolated towns.... Cheers...

WTB -- unload your Akai s2000 cheap? -- So Cal

If you happen to have an Akai s2000 or comparable that's become a doorstop (i.e., it still works, but you've moved to soft samplers), I have $50 for it. I'm in So Cal; either I'd pick it up, or you would ship it here cheaply. I know $50 is prolly ridiculous in most cases, but what can I say -- I'm o...

Malibu - multi-inst/producer, project studio, rustic spot

Just wanted to introduce myself to potential clients and collaborators in the L.A.-area. I?m a musician/producer with a funky, rustic project studio in the Malibu hills. I'm available for tracking, mixing, mastering, with ears and experience in a variety of genres. My three-space studio is in that f...

Re: FT: My Tannoy PBM 6.5's for your JBL Control 1's

Yeah, thanks; Full Compass will make an even better deal on a pair. B&H has 'em too. But I'm thinking that if I traded my Tannoys to a TapeOpster, s/he would get a better monitor and I'd have one less transaction (otherwise, I'll prolly sell the Tannoys, just because I need the space on my console.)...

FT: My Tannoy PBM 6.5's for your JBL Control 1's

If you've got a pair of JBL Control 1 in excellent condition, I have a ridiculous offer for you: trade them to me for your pair of Tannoy PBM 6.5! The reason I'd do this is that I'm putting together a surround monitoring system and already have a pair of Control 1. The Tannoy (55 - 20kHz) are a more...

Re: Master volume control for 5.1 monitoring (cheap)?

Oops, correction... It's the Halfer M5 that's rated down to 70 Hz. The JBL Control 1 is rated at 120 Hz. But I'm still hunching that the JBLs would be less problematic as satellites along with a sub.

Re: Master volume control for 5.1 monitoring (cheap)?

Professor, Thanks for focusing on my 5.1 monitoring setup plans. Your insight has been helpful. Regarding bass management, I?m thinking I should be able to do it within DP, with the 5.1 tools it provides (I know DP pretty well, but have not yet closely studied its apparently sophisticated 5.1 featur...

Re: Oktava MK319 two for $100 at Guitar Center

Today (Sat, Jan 31), I was able to talk a local So Cal GC into the 2 MK319 for $100 deal. I got the last two; checked 'em out on a PA, and they sounded "matched," roughly speaking. Even the manager pled that he'd never heard about the deal, but since he had no January flyers left lying around, he fi...

Re: Master volume control for 5.1 monitoring (cheap)?

Yeah, that article you linked is good.... but it's my plan D. I'm hoping I can get volume control in my 5.1 signal path without going through all the DSP juju of a home theater receiver. And I don't even get radio reception in my canyon, so no fringe benefit there.... ;-)

Master volume control for 5.1 monitoring (cheap)?

Hey, this is my first post here (though I?ve been reading TapeOp almost since its inception.) Maybe I?m a doofus tonight, but I don?t find this addressed in the forums. I?m putting together a 5.1 monitoring system my project studio, and realize I need a master ?volume knob? -- which apparently does ...
