Re: Whatcha's workin on this weekender?

i think the shame of realizing his timing was bad was too much to bear or something. also all the fixing by the engineer would have been a nightmare. There is SO much psychology involved in recording. I have had a few projects scrapped after a client REALLY heard what they were doing and realized t...

Re: Whatcha's workin on this weekender?

As a matter of fact, I ended up using simple drum beats as click tracks. Very often this is the best way to go for someone who is not used to playing to a click. A simple beat, maybe even one that has a little more feel to it than a quantized 8th note thing, is way easier for most people to play to...

Re: Whatcha's workin on this weekender?

The only real frustration was that the two guitar players could not tell that their guitars were out of tune with each other. Man, adding bass is either gonna help or really hurt that! Exactly what I was thinking. We did our best, retracking and retuning, but these guitar players were sel...

Re: Whatcha's workin on this weekender?

Ugh....jealous. I haven't put mics in front of another person in over a year and it's going to be at least September before there's any chance of that changing. That's a real bummer! I'm sorry. Are you in Toronto? I have some very good friends that engineer up there and I wonder if you know them. O...

Re: Whatcha's workin on this weekender?

I tracked a band on Saturday and Sunday. 8 tunes. All basics done, except for bass, which the band does not think they need a bass player. It might be up to me to convince them that they do and add bass tracks myself. The tracks came out really good to start out with. The only real frustration was t...

Re: the olden days before triggering...

Oh! Another fun one... Take an acoustic guitar and tune all the strings to either roots or fifths of the key of the song you're recording. Plug in it's DI line and leave it in the middle of the drum tracking room while the drummer plays. The sound pressure and vibrations of the drums will resonate t...

the olden days before triggering...

Before I yell at you all to get off my lawn, I was just remembering the days when I wanted to get more "click" out of a rock kick drum. I'm sure many people did similar things.... I would gaff tape a penny to the beater head right where the beater would hit, and stick a thumb tack in the felt of the...

Re: Tom tricks

I've definitely done the pitch shifter trick on toms before as well as running it through a resonant low pass filter with a peak around 80Hz which would "ring" every time the tom would hit. I'd have to either edit or gate the track in order for this to work. Sometimes when I find a tom track to be a...

Re: What format for deliverables?

What A.David just said. If the project is going to mastering elsewhere, I will send a Dropbox/WeTransfer?GoogleDrive link to the mastering engineer with the wav files named as follows: " clientname.albumname.tracknumber.songtitle.revision.wav" so for example: "yes.90125.01.ownerofalonelyheart.03.wav...

Re: Headphone mix suggestions?

In order to get everyone "loving their headphone mix", you have to give them individual mixers, which is a whole can of worms. Where I'm at now, we have the Furman system which has 4 mono and one stereo input (via ethernet cables) from the main sending unit. I patch into it via multiple outputs in P...

Re: how often are you using non cardioid patterns?

Like everyone else, I mix it up, depending on the desired effect. I use figure-8 ribbons all the time, so there's that. I have a Stapes mic (precursor to the Avenson STO-2) which is omni and one of my favorite mics ever. It gets used in all kinds of situations from room mic, to spot mic on drums to ...

for the money (really, for any money...), this mic has been great for me too: https://tapeop.com/reviews/gear/138/little-red-monster-tube-condenser-microphone/ Mike This is the first I've heard about this mic. Looks very cool and very budget-friendly. The Weird Audio website is pretty poorly design...

Re: hughes srs ak100/stereo enhancers

More recently, I modded my Edison... That's pretty cool that you did that. Very smart idea. I'm going to hazard a guess that the Behringer doesn't have a delay or phase shift circuit to do a true Haas effect, but, like the Electronic Musician article I linked to above, is just inverting phase and b...

Re: hughes srs ak100/stereo enhancers

So some research has led me to believe that the Bedini BASE was essentially cloned in the Behringer Edison, which led me to realize that it's very similar to the Electronic Musician magazine Stereo Spreader I built in 1991. https://paia.com/manuals/docs/9140_200.pdf Probably one of the simplest circ...
