yeah, I vote for the dbx vca comps too. They're cheep, easy to use, they don't break, they've been around forever, everyone knows what they sound like. They work on anything, but aren't really your first choice on a lot of things. They are used in the studio and live...

One of the things I do is not discuss business in the studio. I just want the artist to focus on the music when they are recording. I explain to the bands not to worry about the clock but to plan to spend more time then they initially planned on that way we leave time to mess around. The last thing ...

I usually just do 30 sec of 1k and then 30 sec of Dolby Noise. I always lay down the 1k without any Dolby, and make note of it. If there is a likelihood of the reel(s) going to another studio then I also do 10 sec of 10k and 100Hz after the 1k. I figure if the machine is properly calibrated the only...

I think I'll try some Brasso on one and see how it works. This all came about because I bought some "new" patch cables and was amazed at how clean they look, they almost look like gold. The other ones I have are 20+ years old and they are kinda brown, I clean them every few months, but it never gets...

Cleaning patch cables

What do you guys use to clean the old WECo style brass long-frame patch cables?

I usually just use tape head cleaner or 99% isopropyl alcohol, but I'm wondering if something like Brasso would work, or if that would leave some sort of residue.

I was the singer for a hardcore band, and still record a good amount of hardcore. I found the key to a good HxC vocal was A) a good voice, and B) a "good" front end. Good meaning proper, not necessarily high end. I almost always use a LDC unless the singer feels uncomfortable with one, then I go wit...

Wow, this is bad to hear, I have one extra roll of 1/4" splice tape, and one roll or 1" that is about half used. I think I picked these up at Amatron here in LA about 2 years ago. Doesn't RMGI make leader tape, you think they would make splice tape too. I know it's always been a 3M/Scotch thing, but...

I'm not trying to record or playback anything four track, just quarter track stereo playback. There are two repro heads one set up for the standard half track, and the other for 2 ch quarter track, kinda like a cassette head is. I just need to play back some consumer reels that were recorded stereo ...

I'm thinking of building my own 1RU 2 500 series rack. I have an extra 1 RU chassis laying around, and I really want to get 2 of the Shadow Hills Mono Gamma mic pre's. I checked them out about a year ago, and they really blew me away. I was thinking of going with the "free lunch" deal Vintage King o...

I usually use an Alice, I have also got really good results from KM86's and even from cheep ribbon mics. It's more about the guitar and good placement then a secret mic. A properly placed SM57 will sound better then a KM84 placed poorly.

If they're only 5 inches deep I'd just build it in a 6 inch or so deep rack, and then build the power supply in another chassis. Maybe one in another rack chassis, or something that could be placed behind the pre's. Putting the pre's and power supply in one chassis may cause noise problems. Also hav...

Ampex AG440 1/4 track setup

I have an AG440b 1/4" machine with both half track and 1/4 track repro heads, I looked through the manual, and cant figure out how to get playback off the 1/4 track heads. Any 440 experts out there know what I am missing? I have some old 7" 7-1/2ips 4 track consumer reels I'd like to digitize.

I like using an old 45 as a template then just cutting around it with a blade. For me a 7" hole still gives you some front head sound with room to maneuver the mics.
