I meant to ask in my initial post, can the distressor be used as a preamp? Can you bypass the compressor and just use the gain as a useful pre?

Just wondering as it would be a real bonus, since I don't get much gain on my own preamps.

Thanks for the multiple answers, the reason I asked is because I heard that the Joemeek and be a bit noisy when cranked and I guess I was wondering exactly how much you have to crank the SM7 to get a decent level. From your answers it seems like the answer is "a lot" so I dunno if the Meek is right....

SM7b needs tons of gain, so it's paired best with a high gain quiet pre. With the 9098, I'm sure you're going to have to crank it to get decent levels for the SM7.
