I'm selling two kidneys on the black market.

The guy said I had three, right?

Re: 1st Compressor

I meant to ask in my initial post, can the distressor be used as a preamp? Can you bypass the compressor and just use the gain as a useful pre?

Just wondering as it would be a real bonus, since I don't get much gain on my own preamps.

1st Compressor

Hey, Seems like there's general consensus on the boards that in terms of a really good first compressor (and assuming that you had the money), the Distressor is the pick of the bunch for it's versatility. Does everyone agree? Would anyone like to suggest and alternative? Yeah I know that everyone ha...

Colored, yet quiet pres. Oh, and cheap

Hey folks, Is there such thing as an affordable pre, or compressor/pre that would be considered colored, but that doesn't add a shitload of noise at higher gain levels? I'm gonna have to buy one to compensate for the insufficient gain I get from my Metric Halo because I want to pick up an SM7, which...

Re: SM7B or RE20?

Thanks for the multiple answers, the reason I asked is because I heard that the Joemeek and be a bit noisy when cranked and I guess I was wondering exactly how much you have to crank the SM7 to get a decent level. From your answers it seems like the answer is "a lot" so I dunno if the Meek is right....

Re: SM7B or RE20?

SM7b needs tons of gain, so it's paired best with a high gain quiet pre. With the 9098, I'm sure you're going to have to crank it to get decent levels for the SM7. I use it with a Great River NV, and it sucks donkey balls. Just kidding. :P Greenshoe I was planning on getting an SM7 but I need to bu...

Re: Guitar/Amp Hiss

I would definitely give a different brand of tubes a try. See what you can find. I would try to find a reputable dealer (Dublin's gotta have some, right?) Um..... :? Possibly not the greatest selection, but I have a friend visiting from NYC who can probably bring me something, along with shitload o...

Re: Guitar/Amp Hiss

Little from Column "A". Little from Column "B".

Turns out it's the guitar and the amp, damn.

Not the tubes in the amp (I tapped) so something else. Capacitors?

As for the guitar, I tried it with my strat and jaguar, both single coil of course, so that's probably it there.

Re: search for laptops driving me CRAZY!!!

I see the Halo and it looks tight, but too expensive. I've been looking at the MOTU 828mkII and it looks like it has everything the Digi001 has except Protools. I was going to get a PowerBook G4, but I've had to downgrade to an iBook G4 because of funds. But if I use the iBook and an 828 and DP3 I ...

Re: search for laptops driving me CRAZY!!!

I just picked up a second hand Metric Halo for $850. If you're a better negociator than me you might get pretty close to your price, considering they're only $1,150 or something new. If you're looking to save on the software check out tracktion at: www.rawmaterialsoftware.com $80, you can't go wrong...

Re: Guitar/Amp Hiss

All good advice, thanks. I'm gonna print this page out and take it home with me (I'm at work, yawn) and see what's what. My money is still on something in the amp. Actually I should offer odds. Re: Guitar/Amp Hiss

I should also mention that it's my hunch that it's coming form the amp, although I could well be wrong. Other than the tubes, what are the possible sources of noise?

Guitar/Amp Hiss

I'm excitedly waiting for delivery of my recording equipment so I can take the plunge into the wonderful world of making records. It just struck me that I should try and do something about the damn hissing sound coming out of my amp when it's turned on. I should mention my setup, it's pretty standar...
