Haven't heard the album but just finished the Hesse book. Boy, was he all over the place -- academia, politics, philosophy, pschology, love, class, indulgence, isolation, maddess, despair, nostalgia, theatre. He even talked about recording. He hated it --- called it the 'anti-art', being the ol' cur...
The Sharp just isn't slick-looking. It's a portable MD, which make cassette walkmans look humungous, so clunky refers more to its design than its size. It's only clunky relative to other MD's which are usually slicker than snot hi-tech. For recording live music they're excellent, especially if you a...
Ditto, except I bought the Sharp new and I mute am radio or npr. It's clunky but it's perfect. .. I have a sharp MD-MS722. I got it almost a year ago off of eBay new for about $65, maybe $75 I can't remember. It's a little clunky, but you can set the record level. I think it works and sounds great. ...
My favorite non-reverb reverbs (they really ARE reverbs, they're just marginally useful), are the "Hall" reverb on an Alesis and the "Underground Parking Garage" setting in Cool Edit. I call the Alesis a non-reverb because you can really hear it --- you know it's a reverb, vs. more quality/transpare...
Avoid base Hosa cables in the orange package. They're cheap but they're crummy and some places that's all they sell. I have one of these inserts and it needs replacing --- one of the mono/TS ends is dead. Even when it worked I could tell the difference between it and a better cable. .. Grab an "inse...
If you have a sampler, you can sample guitar notes played in double time and drop the sampling rate in half (this might be the same as playing the note a midi octave below). The result, esp. on the low E, is a real thick bass sound.
Just per levels, if you record near peak you will almost always have to reduce your level. If you don't, you may not. There's a potential time/hassle savings I suppose. If you need to boost you always can, and the sound stays pretty much the same, just louder. From my experience, once you get the so...
I read, I think it was, an Electronic Musician article on Goldie in the 90's hearlding him as the master of time stretching. I knew then, that's exactly what I _Do Not_ want to do. Nothing against Goldie, I mean, after all, he got to kick-it with Bjork, right? Buuuuuuuut, time stretching falls into ...
Troubleshooted a failure. The right-hand side of my headphones were breaking up. Distortion, crackle, whatever. This happen after a night of fucking with a direct guitar signal. It has to be possible, so I keep trying. So what was the problem? Not the expensive soundcard. Not the nice mixer. Not the...
heh heh heh. . . the threadkiller. BACK LUCIFER, BACK I SAY!!!!. these things surely only come out at night. I won't even touch one. I'm a big boy now. You say it kills threads, but really, has anyone heard a POD and wondered how the artist/engineer got that guitar sound? Does anyone want to start ...
I'm not sure if i understand your question completely.. I was probably just looking for a rule of thumb for reamping to quell any intellectual curiosity. It's great, but it's also a luxury. Questions lead to questions and so forth. The aim is to get all the frequency response and level out of the i...
A cheap notebook and sequencing software with a quality midi interface. I have a boss sp-202 phrase sampler. It does not offer any sequencing. Basically I'm looking for a drum machine or hardware sequencer that i can use to sequence my samples. I want to be able to build patterns from different samp...
A few specific questions: Why is it the hotter the signal, the less impedance is required? (ie. Instruments require 1meg ohm, but mixer line inputs are in the 10k range) I know it has to do with frequency response, but I'm not sure why. Also, if high impedance is generally good for, can you have too...
Society in general has a problem with plural nouns. "the children", "the media". Makes me want to say, "oh, really, which?" .. Just a funny observation: It always makes me laugh when I see studio websites that say " Our goal is to..." and " We here at Lots-of-people-work-here studios..." and "Give u...
