Re: For the love of God, please help me record direct bass.

Boy, I don't usually do this. There aren't words to describe how WRONG the Dandy Warhols are about everything good, decent, and acceptable in the world. Sorry. I'm a recovering asshole. Lady and gentlemen: relapse. I dunno, when you meet people and they're amiable and you like their work ...

The Satyricon is gone?!@#

What a crime against humanity! That was the best club ever. I know, I'm half a year late, but since I don't live in Portland anymore, I behind the news. For those who don't know, Satyricon was the best club ever -- like Satyricon the semi-holy. Everyone played there. It lasted 20 years, but it shoul...

Re: For the love of God, please help me record direct bass.

Well, this comment begs the question, are you really dissing treble or are you dissing compression, eq, and most importantly, digital recording? Did you have problems with treble when you were listening to cassettes, with all that gratuitous use of effects during the era? We probably agree here, and...

Re: Favourite Guitar Soundzz

is........ what's your favourite sounding guitarist/guitar sound on record. Single guitar sound on record: I'd have to that huge distorted panned chord in the Rolling Stone's "Under Cover of the Night" But Generally, the sounds from Johnny Marr, Robert Smith, and Daniel Ash. It's more like magic re...

Re: For the love of God, please help me record direct bass.

In the end, the only person actually listening to the bass is going to be you and other bass players. This is so sad but so true. I was listening to the Clash this morning---sweet bass playing, but it doesn't really matter. I'm starting to appreciate the Dandy Warhol, Zia/Peter aesthetic more each ...

Re: P & J basses... Mexican (MIM)... what's the differen

From my experience, the el cheapos are heavier which your back will really care about once you leave your first few decades. The also tend to have noisier electronics which is a real bugger when recording. Last drawback is potentially horrible set-up, as QC is given less attention in the places wher...

As a goad, this is absolutely brilliant. I hope it's a goad.

Re: Listening party(a point of reference)

If what we do is a subjective art... I am a huge fan of listening. I listen to the beatles, then Dido, then BDP, then public enemy, then kiss, then Korn, then the Mekons... Whatever it is, Was Kiss well recorded? I haven't listened to them much because the music is so bad, but if there's something ...

Re: Sequencing, Synths and starting

Too much room? A synth? *looks at the wall behind him* The seven or so guitars and two half stacks lining that wall over there may have something to say about a lowly little SYNTH taking up too much room. I PARTIALLY agree with you on the 'don't get a guitar' idea. For someone that has no pr...

Re: guitar frequency response & eq

For example, the high D, 22nd fret, is 4,698.64 hz... by my references, the high D is 1175 Hz, making 4,698 Hz the 4th harmonic. Right, so when you EQ anything on a guitar over about 1200 Hz, you're operating on purely harmonic content. Fascinating! I use software to distort clean tube-amped guitar...

Re: Mic for Minidisc - Plug in power?

Sony makes a couple stereo mics specifically designed for portable minidiscs & plug-in power. One is called an ECMS907. The other, don't recall the model, costs a little less (the 907 was in the $100 range last I checked). BTW, I've used both of them and they sound great. Spanking clean with full ra...

Re: in what ways can i make this bass sound better?

Same goes for synth bass, which I use more often these days--what sounds cheesy by itself may sound fabulous in a mix. Check out the awesome Alesis NanoBass! jrl I've spent hours in pain try to get cheesy synth bass to sound like something other what it is. On an Alesis no less. There are some good...

Re: Recording bass through a guitar amp

I love the sound of bass through a 4X12. GROWL. I thought the growl came from the pickup next to the bridge, should you be so lucky to have one. Well, sounds like no one has actually destroyed a guitar amp with a bass, so this is a good thing. I've reached the lifetime quote of stupid expensive mis...

Re: guitar frequency response & eq

No that isn't true. The notes alone go higher than 1k, and the harmonics reach a bit higher still...a high cut filter can do good things for a miced amp sometimes too! For example, the high D, 22nd fret, is 4,698.64 hz... My reference is the instrument frequency chart on the PSB speaker site: http:...

XLR to 1/4" mic cables

Is it normal for this type of connection to require more preamp gain to get the level up than a XLR to XLR connection? I really have to push the preamp, and more push = more noise. As is, the connection works for loud sources, like an amp, but is completely usable for something like vocals.
