i love the Marshalls. they sound great for being so cheap. i got my MXL990 for about $100 new. it's no-frills, for sure, but it's cheap and it does its job nicely.

like [just about] any condensor mic, you'll need phantom power if you get one.

Re: recording drum machine to tape question (ghost beats)

either that or there's a mic picking it up from someone's cans. see if you can isolate it to a track. just go through and solo each track. you'll probably hear it on one (possibly two) tracks. might have to re-record them! if you don't hear it while soloing tracks, then it might not have printed... ...

Re: boutique amps??? what about boutique guitars/basses

i've heard that Michael Kelly guitars are pretty good. they sure look swank. he's got an eBay shop where you can get them for nickels and dimes, and in models you don't even see on his regular site.

Re: "Worst gear ever!" Comic book dude from simpso

i forgot to add my DOD Thrash Master distortion pedal. most unusable distortion i've ever heard. so harsh, and not in a good way at all! bought out of sheer desperation, after another, cheaper (and better) pedal died. i only use it when i absolutely HAVE to. i also have this utterly shitty, cheap-as...

Zoom RFX-300. the noisiest thing i've ever played thru, and that's including the $10 Rocktronix (or whatever they were) effects pedals i used to have when i was a teenager. good for nothing. i mean it. nothing . Cort guitars. one word: plywood . (also: plastic fretboard?? ) good for parts. no, wait...

Dayton/Ohio music

so i've been getting into some local artists here lately, and i thought i'd tell you what i've been listening to. everybody already knows how great Guided By Voices , The Breeders , Brainiac , and The Oxymorons (, etc.) are, but you have GOT to check out: Lab Partners really amazing dreamy shoegazer...

Re: Getting a good performance out of a shy/mumbling vocalis

i tend to sing like that, too. in my case, though, it's deserved, because my voice is awful. BUT... what i do is record the melody on guitar or something so i can sing along to it. that way i'm at least a bit more confident that i'll hit the right notes (in theory... in practise? nope.), and it feel...

Re: Getting a good performance out of a shy/mumbling vocalis

hey trans, how's Bob lately? well, he screwed us all over again , and now i have to remain here on this desolate stinkpit drowning in Pinks, Normals, and Bobbies. but i'm fairly confident that the next time the world's supposed to End, it'll happen on time for once. and how can ya be mad at a guy w...

Re: old 4 track

could be any one of a number of things. probably not due to not having been callibrated, alligned, biased... but be sure to do those after you get the main problem fixed! does it slow gradually, or is it just running really really slow? could be a motor, capstan, or even the power supply, or who kno...
