Right on, Wes. How's that store? Still selling pirate gear?
And has anyone else checked this out? It's serious, I swear.

I like the sansamp bass driver DI, too, and find that dialing in the right sound at the beginning usually helps to avoid eq'ing later. I agree you should look at what instruments are competing with your bass: Not just kick drum, but guitars can be a problem. I usually high-pass guitars a lot, and th...

lo-fi epiphany (the believer)

Sorry for the long post, but I've got a nice little parable about what matters: So, I've been doing better work with better musicians lately, and as a result I've been really focussed on upgrading my recording gear - new mixers, preamps, mics, cables, etc. etc., sometimes to the detriment of my focu...

Personally...I'm not sure that going through any additional trouble for MySpace is worth the effort. If some extra work really makes an improvement, I think it might well be worth the effort. Some bands recently have made their names on myspace, and I've heard that in some cases bands are offered b...

Well, Tortoise has been sort of mentioned, but I'd highly recommend them for the uninitiated - "millions now living will never die" would be a good starter. And what about Squarepusher? Some of his stuff is kinda fast/crazy electronic, but he goes super jazzy on the album "music is rotted one note" ...

Yeah, the vox are loud, and really dry. I like the sound, actually, and the singing is better than usual for them - but I think the lyrics mostly suck! What's up? One of my friends is convinced they meant to do it, but I can't be so sure... Musically, though, it's awesome. Kind of a sleeper; I'm sta...

All killer suggestions, but I can't believe no one's said anything about performance! When working on my own stuff recently, I was unhappy w/ an electric sound, so I tried a bunch of different recording techniques on my cheapy acoustic. Better, but not great. So I borrowed a friend's Martin and trie...

You could always try running it through an amp and mic'ing that up...I did an old Yamaha drum machine through a really old Silvertone the other day, and it sounded killer (certainly not 'realistic', though). Just be careful not to blow yr amp. I'm not too into the idea of making a drum machine sound...

Sleepy: No need to come out on ADAT then convert; you could just get converter cards. I run an 8 in 8 out analog Delta 1010 (not the 'lt' model), which has a pci card and a rackmount breakout box. They're cheap, and the conversion sounds great to my ears. Plus, I've had the think since it was new (5...

I think you got ripped off on that tape deck, tater. And to clarify: I think it's absolutely true that younger folks will be less apt to dislike CD or mp3 sound (I think my iPod sounds pretty good w/ the earbuds that came with it go ahead, start hatin'). However, given the experience, I don't think ...

I can't believe you guys still have tape decks in your cars. As somebody who grew up listening to music during the transition from tape to CD (I'm 27), I'm totally fine w/ CD sound, and generally consider it to be preferable to cassette b/c it's so much cleaner. Records do sound great, but you need ...

so, maybe I'm going on a tangent here, but I understand 'two-dimensional' less literally: Something like lacking in depth and character. This is, I think, a problem w/ soft synths largely b/c you just need to get air in there, right? I mean, for purely electronic music this may be desirable, but for...

maybe this is a dumb question, but how do I reamp something w/o buying a reamp box? I've got the same problem w/ the soft synths I use occasionally to compensate for my lack of pricey organs/electric pianos, etc. I'm not opposed to plugins, but plugins on soft synths never adds up to quite 'real' so...
