Ribbons are really good for that type of capture. They pick up the beefy toms in a really different way than condensers.Colorblind wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2024 7:49 amI'd say Coles 4038 as well. But yeah, pricey. The first time I put up a pair I couldn't believe how big and full the toms sounded. No close mics required.

Re: How to structure a multi-part session
It's more efficient and budget conscious to spend time setting up and then working on getting basics for multiple songs. As you mentioned, getting phase relationships and tones for drums is quite time consuming. And learning the space as you go will have its own bit of challenge. Ultimately, you may...

Re: Drum OH's, only
There's a million ways to go on this. What does the space sound like, what type of drum sound are you looking for and what kind of money do you want to spend? Some inexpensive but good sounding options include sE X1R ribbons, Muro Acoustics AC-7 SDC (I've not tried their LDC the AC-8 but am tempted)...

Re: MD-421 clip lock
A couple years ago John B reviewed a commercially available piece that locks the 421 clips in the Magazine. my 441 is missing the clip. meant to find a replacement but I have been using some shockmount thingy probably meant for an SDC... but it sorta works. There's now a clip made with a square hous...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I'm not sure if I posted this, but a few months ago I bought a pair of Muro Acoustics AC7 SDCs and I quite like them. I've been using them a lot of overheads, and I really enjoy the imaging. Recently they sounded quite nice on acoustic guitar as well.

Re: Tell us about your 2023 wrap-up
Less of everything in general, but on the upside a rather significant health issue is finally diagnosed and being treated. I hope for the best for you in regards to this. Thank you! Let's just say that thanks to very modern science it's really not bad at all, versus the "possibly very bad" of only ...

Re: Tell us about your 2023 wrap-up
I'm terrible at doing this. I know a few things were finished and released (one released on Jan 1). Several little 1-3 song projects. A few EPs from soup to nuts. A few clients tracked with me and mixed on their own. A couple where I tracked basics and the rest was finished elsewhere. One record by ...

Yeah, but who's got the space for such a contraption?Nick Sevilla wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 10:01 pmYou could jury rig a circular railing with bearings, smooth and well oiled ones, using a silent electric motor,
as silent as possible anyways, and have the mic inside the frame, with its null cancelling most of the motor noise.

Re: rotating speaker alternative
Found an image of the Mark II version: Califone-stereo.jpg Awesome!!! It's not hard to find single rotor leslie baffles pulled from old home organs. They're basically a styrofoam version of your Mark 2 turntable leslie. I had one for a while and it did an ok job. There's no horn but you get some of...

Re: rotating speaker alternative
Those old Califones were beasts! I used to run a high school AV department back in the '70s and we had a bunch of those Califones as well as Wollensac cassette machines...not particularly hi-fi stuff but capable of surviving a thermonuclear explosion! As I recall the old Leslies, which every roadie...

Re: amps vs. simulators
Rush did their last few tours with only IEMs and amp sims. The only thing on stage was the band, a few drums, and the chicken rotisseries. it sounded great when I saw them (and that was several years ago). Didn't Alex Lifeson still use amps? I thought it was just Geddy's side with the rotisserie or...
