Thanks. My concern with the engineer is that he's been at it a long time and seems quite set in his ways and satisfied with his own limits--somehow his inability to deal with MIDI was our problem, despite the blazingly simple request. My sense is he mostly does live sound and band management, and fo...

Crap Session Experience -- what would you do?

I'm writing as an amateur audio engineer but also a musician with decades of experience going into studios with independent bands. I have also recorded records on my own, taken recording classes, and even written for this august magazine back in the day. But I've had a shit session as a musician, th...

Thanks. It's hard to tell. We're pretty good at turn-taking in arrangement. If there's a "Shimmer" reverb on my bass part, there's a clean, verbless guitar and a dry sax. Sometimes the guitar and keyboard ambiance can get a little crowded but that's it. Stereo amps is a great idea but not sure we ca...

Reanimating this thread as I came to the TOMB to think this question through. I'm in a band where the guitarist uses a lot of rhythmic delays and really massive reverbs on his Strymon pedals, but they are all in front of his amp input, not part of an effects loop. As the bassist, I occasionally also...

thanks everyone for the replies. I think we will make the switch later this summer and then I will see how it sounds and what's possible. It's an imperfect situation, though since I do serious mix downs only a few times a year, I think I'll just borrow back my wife's desk on those days and move the ...

Thanks for the replies. I can't be on the short end because there's only half a wall there.

The question is whether 11/12 feet is "too close" or not for near fields.

Best,

Doing it wrong--monitoring along the long wall

Hi Everyone, Short question: I want to know if anyone has practical tips of setting up and monitoring along the long wall. I've got an 18x12 room, and am considering setting up my monitors along the middle of the long wall. One other irregularity -- on my left there would be a normal wall, on my rig...

Contact mic setup for mbira?

Hi All, Three questions: What is a good contact mic or piezo pickup to affix to an mbrira? Where should I place it on the instrument? and Is there a way to affix it without damaging the wood? I'm not sure it's authentic, and it's much less robust than some that I've seen that are used by actual play...

This Ross Martin options, paired the a couple good pres, look great. If they're as good as they say.

On the expensive end (if you're considering UAD) there's also Metric Halo.

On the cheaper end, there's a Black Lion modded MOTU unit (the MOTU unit goes for cheap used).

For the kind of stuff you want to do, I think you need to worry most about what's outside the computer. In addition to room treatment, there's monitors you know (which is at least as important as "good" monitors if not moreso--NS10s were never "good"), and then a simple, high quality signal path int...

Well, now that I snagged it, can anyone recommend a pair of extremely lightweight tabletop micstands for them for the "interviewing rig"? Thanks. Try these. Very light weight, they fold down and set up in a couple of seconds and are very sturdy. I've used four of them for close to ten years with no...

As long as I'm here -- what do you all think about using these on tabletop stands for interviewing (audio-only)? Is the self-noise low enough? My interview recorder is the m audio micro track II, which has phantom power.

Tried it, liked it, didn't love it. Reverb is a matter of taste. The presets I liked best are the insane toilet of infinity kind, but I kind of enjoy constructing those myself. THe interface I found not all that intuitive though that was a version ago. The company seems good, though. You might also ...
