Get some packing blankets from U-Haul. You can use them to control things that might get out of hand. Have you played any music in the room? How does it sound? Have you recorded anything there? How does that sound? Knowing those things will help in assessing what might help. I seems like a cool spac...

got ya , what i meant was that i was going for a well tracked gritty guitar sound and what i got was a preamp distorting in a way that didn't help. so i don't mind that i have to reamp but i doubt i will ever get it 'right' by fixing it during the mix. its actually turining into something sompletel...

though the efforts of the repliers need to be commended, i feel the poster is quite suspicious...how'd he/she know they would "get eaten alive" for certain question? It's not his first using the internet. call me cynical.... OK you're cynical I apologize in advance if you are on the up & up, I've j...

Besides for tracking basics, most recording (rock, pop, and RAP anyway) is done with one player and one instrument at a time. Thus your 'money channel" can be used on multiple sources. When tracking basics tracks some ?compromises? may need to be made. As you make more money you can get more money c...

these takes were great so i may try to reamp them to add some life back into the tone but i hate to have to do that. Why would you hate that? You wouldn't mind adding an effect while mixing if it enhanced the mix would you? You probably don't mind using EQ or compression. Reamping is just another t...

Re: I am new and I have 1 Million Incredibly Dumb Questions

I'm just gonna go through you whole list. Some of these things may alrady be covered, but I'm doing it anyway. You see, I'm too lazy to read all of the responses today. HAHAHAH Hello TapeOp, There are a large number of basic things about recording that I don't currently understand and fear I never w...

Did you swap out the cable? If you cable his a cold solder joint and is intermittent, the sound can be thin and crappy but still there. That goes for all the cable in the chain.

what about the cheap shit / dual-use stuff that can be used on stage as well? like the Whirlwind Hotbox or the new ART X-Direct active box? I've got a few Rapco passive guys and one active. I once borrowed some super-duper fancy DI and after it was returned we had fix something on a bass part. We d...

Get to know the neighbor. See what they might deal with and when.

You might consider a riser of sorts, though it will only take the drums off the floor, but the walls and ceiling will still resonate...

I've got two instrumen, one speaker nad one TRS on my booth pass throught. Mine are mounted on electrical boxes on the walls and are a bit clunky. The room was mostly built when I found iit so this was the simple choice. I also have a box with four XLR per booth. I wish I had thought of the combo ja...

I don't like a lot of reverb, usually. Sometimmes though a lot of reverb is required. I did a mix of a song once that had a very George Jones vibe. I used one reverp patch on an older unit. I sent a bit of every single track to the reverb. The voice got more of the reverb as did the guitar solo. The...

I think there's a big difference between fixing one line with a quick edit and only playing each section on the song and 'creating' the take. I try my hardest to not edit things that the musican could redo easily. Once you let the musicians see you fix their mistakes, they stop trying to getit right...

I agree with having many cymbals at your disposal. I've got three cases worth. I like thinner symbals and I also find there to be something special about odd sized cymbals. I've got a 21" rock ride that I bought in high school that is still quite useful (though I haven't used it as a player in a whi...
