Well...I did see this legendary drum head in person at the Yuganaut/Roscoe Mitchell gig in Ann Arbor (very fine show BTW) and, given the back story, am not even sure if I know how I should vote. The point about Aqua Teen Hunger Force should be noted...and can easily imagine some crafty stop motion f...

For some reason, hanging wouldn't hold a lot of appeal for me. One could argue that this is an ideal way to acoustically isolate the speakers, but the efforts and logistics involved could be a real PITA. Also, one could argue that the speaker could lose a some energy by generating a bit of swaying m...

Funny. Just last night - sitting in my brand spanking new basement space... It's a terrifying basement. Really big, totally unfinished brick and dark wood - there's a corner we affectionately call the "snuff film corner." Complete with a 2x2 hole in the brick wall that goes into some dark, tomb-lik...

Haha...awesome.

Joking aside, it actually is in the plans to check a couple of shows at the Edgefest this weekend, and your gig with Roscoe looks like a good one...I'll hope to see you there.

Good one!

So...if I come to your gig in Ann Arbor at the Edgefest, do I get to see and hold in my very own hands this piece of drumming history? :)

Re: Ode to a very old drum head

Great story! And most likely, the only ode to a floor tom head in existence. Not sure what I'll do with it. Putting it on a wall seems a bit adolescent to me. Burning it seems like a bit of a forced "MAN-ceremony!!!!"for my taste. Maybe I'll just keep it in the garage and pull it out to show my sons...

Re: Henry Hirsch - Lenny Kravitz - Helios console and twitte

all the cool Lenny Kravitz stuff I'm glad you clarified, because I immediately thought of all the awful, mind-numbing/want-to-kill-myself Lenny Kravitz stuff I've ever heard. I had a similar reaction, and then that terrible American Woman cover somehow came on the radio at work, re-enforcing the mi...

On a more serious note, I did once have a problem with one of my Audio Technica AT4047 mics where it was making all kinds of crackling and hissing. I thought the mic had actually developed a problem, but it turned out to be caused by a cellphone that was on in the room.

If someone can't make a hit record with the built-in cellphone mic, then the problem is with them - not the gear! :D

OT: Suggestions for good film/cinema message boards?

I was recently digging around to find some good film/cinema message boards and wasn't having much luck finding anything of real substance. IMDB is surprisingly good for this, but there must be something out there. I figure that there may be a few fellow film buffs here on the TOMB that could offer a...

OK...I think I need to drop my head in shame at completely dropping the ball on this. A variety of reasons for this outside of a bit of flakiness and just plain forgetting about it, though I should note that I hadn't completely walked away from it and was actually recently thinking about resurrectin...

I'm thinking Jim Williams is pretty on target here. I have a Soundcraft Delta with a master section that has been modded by Jim and I can run it REAL hot with it still sounding pretty great. There is, of course, a point where it craps out, but I can run it well above zero and get it pretty darn near...

i think bands like belle and sebastian / fleet foxes / camera obscura etc... do things nice and tastefully (you aren't gonna hear any "strange" panning on those records, but the overall sound of them pays tribute to 60s pop / folk for sure...) Another recording that I think really nails this vibe w...

There are plenty of really amazing musicians playing today using well-built, well-tuned instruments making records that are diametrically opposite to stuff from the 60s. of course there are lots of great players these days - but they are not gathering 20 of them at a time to perform at together onc...

Interesting point on the electric sanders throwing up too much dust. Thinking back on work I have done/had done, this is a good point. I'm pretty sure the guy I have used, who is a really skilled "old timer" type and a real artisan with the stuff, has not used electric sanding - even for the bigger ...
