Isn't Jody Stephens himself an engineer? I was really fascinated with his drumming for a while and recall reading that on the interweb somewhere.

Yeah most of that "telephone" sound was me being a little heavy handed with the re-amped vocals. The place I was working at really didn't have many good reverb options and the room itself was kind of dead. (Similarly, trying to force a big roomy drum sound there doesn't work so well.) So it's either...

Rough mix - suggestions appreciated

Rough mix for a tune my band recorded, would appreciate any comments http://www.irreverends.com/media/vanishing_trains.mp3 mostly I'm struggling with vocal placement, the stats are: Singer with decent pitch and range, but nasally. To mitigate this we went with a EV RE-20 which seemed to take the edg...

The Noble and Cooley ones are my favorite. They have a design so that where the strings attach, they don't raise the profile of the snares on the head, which allows for better contact.

It's true that even torque of tension rods around the drum does not guarantee in-tuneness, but if you're drum has the washers and rods lubricated, the torque trick will get you close to where you want to be. Personally, I torque by feel, and can usually get each rod within about 1/4 - 1/2 turn of it...

ok, so if you had one mic that sounded really sweet as a drum o/h and say, a pair that were, say, acceptable-but-not-awesome, would you go mono? Or is stereo imaging more important?

1/2" 8 track synched w SONAR

anyone have any luck striping a SMPTE track on an 8 track open reel and having SONAR chase it? My plan is to track drums and vox to tape and everything else digital. Any success stories, failures, words of wisdom or general caveats?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Snake Question

Here's a wicked quick rundown of what a patchbay can do for you: Ideally, you'll want ALL your connections running into a patchbay (or patchbays). With this, you'll be able to route your entire signal path without having to get behind your mixer and outboard equip and move cables around. So you'll h...

Audio Interface for Notebook running Win XP

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find it in a search, so here goes: I have a notebook (P4 2.4gHz, 40 gig, 512 MB) and I want to get a multitrack interface for it. I prefer to get an 8 input unit. I'm thinking about the Layla 24 with the PCMCIA adapter, but I'd be amenable to oth...

Gtr amp output trannie question

I need to replace an output x-former on an old Silvertone amp. Any ideas where I should look for one, and, most importantly, what type/specs I should look for? Here is what I know about the amp: Sears Silvertone model 1331, tweed covered, 8" speaker Class A operation - single 6V6 power tube Five-wat...

Re: Favorite Lyricists

Joel RL Phelps has some really good lyrics ("I'm as thin as the dress that you've got on" - and dozens more) I think Gillian Welch writes very good lyrics, too. But it's true that lyrics have a LOT to do with making a good song great. It's also true that a bad lyricist like Jimmy Buffett or solo Bob...
