i like both techniques for different things. recording through an amp can add a really cool space to the sound that you are recording. recording directly through a pedal can sometimes sound "in your face" or "on the edge of the speaker." i like both, depending on what i want the part to be doing.

if it is a small room, i would say to try two small diaphrams in an ortf configuration. place them about chest high out in front of the kit. this will get a good picture of the kit. then mic the kick and the snare for punch.

i really like the new buzz elixirs on overheads. they capture a really clear picture of the drum kit. i like coloured pres for the rest of the kit. bae 312 for the snare and rack tom, osa L-1 for the inside kick and floor tom, vintech dual 72 for outside kick and room. this is what i like right now,...

One thing that we did on our first label-sponsored record (cause we had alot more time on our hands) to relieve stress was to record a phrase, reverse it, and learn to say it backwards as close as we could. it sounds weird by itself, but when you reverse it once more it sounds like a complete lunat...
