It's pretty well known around here but I'll mention it anyway, the Alice mic's made by Scott Helmke (if he's still making them) are fantastic. The mids are really aggressive with a bit of low mid heft. No mud, awesome color. This mic reminds me of the incredible aggressiveness you get from the AT 40...

JBL Control 1's are pretty outstanding. Use use the passives but they have an active model as well. Never fails to amaze me how great the low end response is on those little speakers.

Lately I've been enamoured with the iSK Starlight for vocals. The "best" of the iSK line is now being offered in North America by a Canadian distributor for prices that are really fantastic. The Starlight for instance is only $129 and offers premium electronics, integrated shockmount, high output an...

Just to add to the conversation, I always track a mic on an amp but the other day decided to try Amplitube in an Aux bus to see how it could enhance my existing clean track. I auditioned the Fender '57 Deluxe (amongst other's) and found it to sound really wonderful. Added some pedals like reverb, ch...

Mine came with black knobs almost 2 years ago. I called them to ask what's up with that and he said that's all they had at the moment. I admit I was a little tweaked about it. I also don't understand why people describe the effect/color as "thick" and "gooey". It does have a smidge of color but noth...

I have to agree, that Nigel thing from UA is pretty darn cool.

I have an A6 - awesome mic that I like on vox, also, tho' it's allegedly designed not for 'em. I want another ... I feel like I've not been recording enuff acoustic guitar, prob'ly because electric is so much easier to. That said, I like having a decent tube mic (MXL V69M, even) and an SDC (lately,...

A pair of ADK A6's rule my world lately tracking much more than just AC guitars. I find them really particular nice on guitar amps and surprisingly wonderful for vocals. They're the least sibilant mic I've ever used on vocals and add a little flattery. But on acoustic guitars the mids are really smo...

A relatively clean amp, then slap Stillwell's Bad Bus Mojo on that track and tweak into distortion. I use this from time to time for believable results.

Mostly though, just a Vox amp with the Gain and Volume at settings that are conducive to just a little breakup and the Mid Boost switched engaged.

Thanks Kenny . When you say zero gain, do you mean zero is "off"? Or is signal still coming through at that point? Looking up the specs on the 2i2 it shows different gain ranges for different settings. Like Mic, Line and Instrument. -4dB to +46dB, -21dB to +29dB, +4dB to +46dB respectively. Also wh...

My 2i2 is set up this way also when the Gain is turned all the way to the left you get Zero gain which is necessary for some applications. But Zero gain on my ZED14 (for instance) is actually pretty Hot. Therefor, attenuating the signal on the ZED is actually returning the gain to "True Zero". Congr...

buy some fun guitar pedals or something like that. you've got enough stuff to make a perfectly good recording. You don't need a ribbon mic or something with color. Make your source sounds cooler... that's my advice. ^^^^^ This I also have to mention Waves Kramer Master Tape has made a really big di...

For virtual instruments, IK's Miroslav Philharmonik has a really nice sound I feel comfortable using. And Waves Kramer Mater Tape has added depth and dimension that wasn't there before in my final mixes. It's a depth and dimension I only experienced when I used to dump my mixes to 1/4" Ampex 456. "G...

Finally got it working on my end thanks to Casey and the program is a big help. After acquiring Waves Kramer Master Tape I'm using the new plugin to remaster my most recent recordings for an EP and the program allows me to compare the old masters to the new ones in an unbiased way. Thanks Casey, gre...
