I've never hated an otherwise good song because I suspected the vocals were recorded in someone's bedroom. Also, I've never loved a crappy song just because it was recorded with pristine fidelity. That said, and though I don't have much experience recording vocals in pristine environments, I DO know...

Recording harp with vocals

A friend brought her harp around and I recorded her playing a song the other day. here's the tune: http://soundcloud.com/calewilcox/i-aim-too-low I set up a bunch of mics because I didn't really know how to approach it. What you hear there is mostly an ORTF LDC pair looking at the harp like it was a...

Chris G,

Kinda off topic but I'd be thrilled to hear anything else you remember about the El Oso sessions. That album melts my head!

On the tangent of figure 8's... I multitrack my 9 piece trad ska band's practices all the time. We're jammed into a pretty small space with low ceilings and minimal treatment, without a lot of physical separation between players. I struggled for a while trying to keep certain sounds out of certain m...

I always find that kind of mixing (starting with far from pristine tracks) really frustrating and unrewarding. Even after hours of hard work to try and meld everything together, you still end up with a mix you aren't super pleased with. What I do is pretty much what has been said about embracing the...

Emerald City Guitars is worth checking out, down in Pioneer Square (Seattle). Also, if it's your thing, Bass Northwest is right around the corner, and apparently is the largest bass-only store in the world.

Food-wise, hit Mama's Mexican on 2nd and Bell, you won't regret it![/b]

Rolls MP222 Stereo Mic Pre... anyone know anything?

Found this little guy while hunting around for cheap pres the other day:

Has anyone used one of these before? I'd be curious how it compares to the M-audio dmp3 or symetrix 202.

I'll do it when I'm phase checking sometimes because I can't hear super low stuff in my listening space. But I make super sure no one is around first.

Really cool sounds! I could totally hear your stuff on KEXP, seems right up their alley. I guess I'm not going to be much help though, most of the promoters I know are reggae/ska guys. Best of luck though! I'll have to catch a show some time.

Bought it! Great sounds all the way through, man. That guitar sound has me wanting one of those r144's. Did you do much eq work on the guitar after tracking?

On the UAD tip, I should mention in my mix I used the UA RealVerb plug on for the drum verb and the Pultec EQ on the master bus. I almost always have that Pultec on the mix, it's a pretty useful plugin. The UAD stuff is great but a little cumbersome in PTLE (the latency compensation is a chore). I h...
