I don't think they had direct outs, but what about something like the old Roland M-240R or Roland M-480 rack mixers.

I can't be on the short end because there's only half a wall there. Hmmm... Again, not knowing your set up, is that really a constraint? It's generally better for monitors to not be right up against a wall. Being set up along the half wall might provide some space between your monitors and the wall...

I'd go for wall plates. Seismic Audio also has good quality (and less expensive) plates.

Also, as an alternative, (I can't quite picture your room) but could you just flip your set up to the other (short) end?

I have the EQ article... (Nov 71), does anyone have the others on a dusty shelf? I'm guessing Aug 71 til Jan/Feb 72. You sure it was from EQ magazine? I don't think EQ was around in '71/'72.
