Re: Recording rock drums with only 2 mics

Ooh a UA610...that'll do the trick. As for the snare being really loud compared to the overhead...it's possible but that all depends on the mic, how close it is, if it has any proximity effect things like that. However if you are using a Y cable to get 2 mics into one preamp before it gets to the MB...

Re: Recording rock drums with only 2 mics

Yeah D12 sorry that's what I meant. Posting the pic would be a bit difficult as it is in a back issue of Mojo magazine and I don't have the means to scan it and so on. I can tell you the issue no. tomorrow if you're really interested though.

Re: Question about compressors and how many you use?

Well Zekmoe, it sounds as though you might want to try all of the options given to you. I would say, see if you can ween yourself off of your current method of working and find another route to making a mix that pleases you. Not because what you're doing is "bad" but see if you can expand yourself c...

Re: Recording rock drums with only 2 mics

I was just looking at some pictures of Ringo and his set up during one of the many Lennon session last night and the engineers for those sessions (either: Phil McDonlad, Richard Lush, John Lickie sic, Andy Stevens or Eddie) seemed to follow Glyn John set-up with a U67 about 2-3 feet above the cymbal...

Re: Recording rock drums with only 2 mics

That may in fact be the case but it sounds as though he might have 2 outboard mic preamps which he then runs into the MBox. What exactly is the run down of your equipment and normal signal path PT?

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review

Any where you would recomend going for such experience? Also, I was browsing guitar center's deal of the century, of the minute (login/pass: cool / deals) and saw no sign of the oktava deal being discussed. What I did see was an MXL 990+991 plus a 2 channel budget pre for $129. I'm looking to expan...

Re: Recording rock drums with only 2 mics

Yes you can use a Y cable even when the mics that are going through said cable require phantom power. One mic pre will in fact power your two condensor mics or a condensor and dynamic. This is also something I've done myself, so I'm not speaking theoretically. As for the signal path being purer yes ...

Re: Recording rock drums with only 2 mics

Phil Brown recorded the drums on Talk Talks laughing Stock with one tube mic 30 feet away from the drums and a kick mic. Phenomenal sound.

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review

Actually you did not say Oktava anywhere in your post, so keep your invectives to yourself and pay a little more attention to how phrase your words. Clearly I was calling you out on the blatant error in saying that you can get Nuemanns for $59. Let's leave it at that shall we. Insert the patting on ...

Re: Recording rock drums with only 2 mics

Yeah, Fletcher had been quoted in the most recent issue of Tape Op as responding to someone asking him for a drum sound like When The Levee Breaks and his response was something akin to, "Well if you want a drum sound like that then you're going to need a shovel, lot's of time and a can of air fresh...

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review

Re: Recording rock drums with only 2 mics

To answer your questions yes it is possible to use two mics into a Y cable and record that into one channel. The difficult part is the placement determines the volume of each of the mics when you do that ,since you obviously can't control each after it's brought down to one signal. Second, yes you a...

Re: Recording rock drums with only 2 mics

Well clearly, investing in a 4 channel mixer would be wise choice but in keeping with PT's current...situation, I think it would be wise of us to keep offering advice towards a 2 mic set up that he might try. Which leads me to another suggestion that, though a bit unconventional and not really a goo...
