Re: Mentoring and Giving Mix Feedback

Live streaming feels like the great lost opportunity of this last year. As an engineer I listen to people's terrible sounding streamed shows and see a whole new avenue of jobs I could be doing. But I can't be in the room to work the gig. And if I could be in the room then so could a real audience a...

Re: Mentoring and Giving Mix Feedback

Maybe the chief lesson for people asking for mix feedback is that mixing ain't easy? That there's a reason to hire experienced professionals to do the job? It's tough for most people. One of those weird little talents, I guess. Been hearing from church sound people who've been forced to start mixin...

Re: Mentoring and Giving Mix Feedback

Something I learned years ago and in a much different art was that it's best if you only try to correct one mistake at a time. If you send a long list of things it's just lead to giving up. Probably the biggest mistake I hear in other amateur's productions is piling up too many layers and parts. May...

Re: RANT: "in your spare time.."

Do you think you need to be fairly established to be so blunt and upfront about it? When I was recording people for money ($10/hr in the 80's-90's) I think if I'd presented them with a list like Larry's they would have just gone to someone else. I totally get it though, every item on Larry's list r...

Re: ADVICE: send in my re20 or fix myself?

I just noticed on the back of the return form they actually did specify the repairs. "Refurbished Microphone with new element, transition, wiring and foam. Microphone passed complete factory testing after repair. Test printout is attached" From the list of parts, it looks like I've basically got a ...

Just chiming in to say I'm massively jealous. That would be an amazing space to have.

Re: RANT: "in your spare time.."

I am reminded of my aunt being surprised at the result of the following situation: she has a high maintenance dog that “needs” specialized grooming because just any pet smart won’t do, she takes it to the breeder for grooming, way out in the sticks. She bought a brand new car recently, and decided ...

Re: Footswitch questions for Subwoofers (DIY 2.1 sub-bypass)

I'm pretty sure you'd want a latching switch. What most guitar stompboxes use as the main big switch. You could also use a toggle switch, which might be more appropriate since you can easily see what position it is in. https://www.jameco.com/z/T100T1B1A1QN-Jameco-Valuepro-Mini-Toggle-Switch-SPST-ON-...

If you're in a DAW w/plugins, I don't see the point. As for mic and pre, that might be a different story.
I still have a dbx 1066 compressor for occasional tracking. Helps to compress my own vocals for monitoring via IEM earbuds, which is something where you don't want any latency at all.

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

since you are using a DI, YMMV if trying to setup another mic to cancel it out. instead you could try duplicating the guitar track, isolate the pick noise (meaning EQ the crap out of it so that's all you hear) on the dupe, then reverse polarity on that track and bring it up in the mix until the pic...

Re: 15 amp vs. 20 amp breakers for studio

In theory all regular wall receptacles should be 15A. Plugs for 20A have one of the pins sideways, but things have gotten weirdly blurred with 15A vs. 20 receptacles. Quite often you'll see a receptacle that can take either type of plug, and with a 20A breaker. There's also something about having a ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Electro-Voice 641. Electro-Voice 641.jpg Rescued from my pack-rat younger self. It was in a music junk drawer, still with a mono 1/8" plug attached. I used to use it in college with a funky little cassette recorder, sort of a proto-Walkman voice dictation thing. Sounds pretty similar to a 635a. I or...

Why is it that when an audio device picks up a radio station, at least 70% of the time it's Spanish language?
Because a lot the AM stations are non-English. It's a cheaper platform if you don't have a huge audience. It's also the kind of signal that can be accidentally decoded by audio gear.

If there was ever a situation that screamed "rent what you need for the session", this would be it.
