Re: Cables?

If they are that short, and you are not going to be moving them around a lot, I would find some HOSA stereo pairs, I use them, they work good and last a long time. You can get the in various lengths, and they are cheap, I think Sam Ash use to carry them.

Re: Guitars: New, used, or vintage

If you like Pauls, find a Yamaha SG or SBG with an ebony fretboard on ebay. You can get them under a grand, and they kick the best LPs ever mades ass by a mile. They have the same girthy feel, but sound better, and are better balanced. You can also set the action much lower than on Pauls.

Re: Re-recording a great (or not so great) album

I would go for Physical Graphiti. That is a fantastic album, but the bass is mixed way back in it, I would remix it more like Zep II. I never liked the LET IT BE album either , because of the production, it always sounded to me like it was mixed inside a shoe box, the drums sound like they was recor...

Re: Drummers... another stupid qestion.

One of my favorite drummers is Jerry Shirly of Humble Pie. The dude had this amazingly powerfull sound, and I am betting that he was hell on kick drum heads. The best kick drum sound I ever heard is "Thrity Days In the Hole" from "SMOKIN". The kick drum comes into the beggining of that song like clo...

Re: String Gauge

I use 10s, and get good tone. If you like the rubbery feeling of 9s but want more the tone of 10s, D Addario sells half size strings, I used to buy them in bulk from Musicians Friend, the guages started with .095, .105, and like that. Tens are also easier to get intonation and action to jive than 9s.

Re: say WHAT?!? new mellotron?

I am suprised that someone did not develope a synth that was an Mellotron clone. I would think someone could develope a device that has all the advantages of the durability and portability of a synth without the maintainance of keeping a mellotron going, I have heard that changing the tapes on them ...

Re: (Whatever works) Equipment you love but evreyone else ha

Price tag has little to do with quality anymore, it has more to do with status appeal, advertising, and laurels. Some of the best stuff out there is also the cheapest. \ Slider, I have OLD Alesis micro stuff, I have a 1/3 rack comp I bought in the late 80s, the thing is a gem. I record bass into it ...

Re: What's the trick to stereo guitars?

It could be a matter of mic placement, I am thinking that if you are trying to mic the amp close up you may be getting some phase cancelation that is robbing some of the frequencies. Try micing it from father back, maybe even put a condensor mic far away from the amp in the room.

Re: Do legendary albums have one consistent sound?

I am moslty familiar with rock era music, and during the rock era it seems that the best albums had a consistant sound, but that consistancy came more from the fact that the artists used the same studio to mix the album as well as mostly the same insturments, and recorded the project at the same stu...

Re: help !!! guitar amp feedback

I think soundguy is likely right, and that the reason it does it with the SG is that the SG pickups are more microphonic than other guitars you tried. If the tubes are singing, I am thinking they probably generate a pitch that the SG pickups are regenerating.

Re: Drummers... another stupid qestion.

I play drums, but that is not my main instrument. I have played bass and lead guitar in bands, and I gotta tell you, I like drummers that play simple steady beats with hammers. I played bass in band with a VERY gifted jazz drummer, this guy could do some amazing things. However, he played with q-tip...

Re: MF Blowout on Behringer Autocom Stereo Comps $49 - any g

I have been using compressors for over 30 years, too numerous to count. I probably have 7 or 8 of them now, in various configurations. I did not say "soft knee" was foreign to me, I used it as an example that came to mind as one of the many ammenities the device has. I use compression very sparingly...

Re: MF Blowout on Behringer Autocom Stereo Comps $49 - any g

I have a lot of behringer stuff, and it is all fantastic stuff, even if it was not so inexpensive I would buy it because I like the quality of it. I have a quad comp/gate that is similar to the one you are talking about, and it does a great job, it is very transparent sounding. The gate works really...

Re: Classic recordings that are out of tune

Rigsby My point to that was meant to be that, it is easy now to look back and poke at the inadequecies of music from the rock era, but in fact if much of the newer music out there had to be recorded under the same conditions, it wouldn't be any better, and in my estimation wouldn't be as good. Anoth...
