I've no idea how they sound or how they'll hold up, but if they're built by Behringer (or by the usual Behringer approach to manufacturing for a low retail price) they'll not be easy to mod. Circuit board instead of point to point, probably heavy use of SMT parts. Not to mention the copper traces o...

My band just hired a violinist/violist to lay down some string parts for a tune we just wrapped up. He kicked ass, a total pro. His approach was to bring 2 different violins and a viola, and he ended up doing two tracks of each violin and 2 more of viola. He would turn his body at different angles f...

As a side note on some of the examples mentioned, some follow a strict formula that does go somewhere, but its a place they all go. Verse, chorus, verse, bridge, solo, verse........ they do go somewhere, just like driving the same way to work everyday is going somewhere. Nicely stated. You are more...

When I think "water sound," my mind immediately brings up the keyboard sound on "No Quarter" and the vocal sound on "Planet Caravan," both of which are rotating speakers with lots of verb and not much high end.

I would be careful and try to test the H2 with a typical situation you plan to record before you plunk down the cash... I have one, I've used it a lot, and there are a couple of issues. With lower sound-pressure recordings, the thing is awesome - putting down an acoustic singer-songwriter for exampl...

Tool are clearly big fans of backwards reverb, it's all over their records.

Also, it was used on, like, EVERY SINGLE death metal production from the old-school Scott Burns/Morrisound Studios era.

For picked bass, I have found that 1.2 - 15k is my favorite frequency range to get some of that aggressive pick bite out of the bass, without getting to much clackiness or finger noise. Tread lightly, because that's where a lot of your vocal information is too. As with all things, YMMV.

What about procuring a couple of wooden shipping pallets and stomping on those? You don't have a wood floor, but maybe just the "boots on wood" sound is enough. Never tried it myself, but maybe it's worth a shot. As for the claps, don't forget the tried-and-true method of "drumstick on phone book" t...

Phil Spector used to get EXCELLENT performances by pointing shotguns at singer's heads.

Oh wait, you guys are talking about microphones. Carry on.

Maintain mono compatibility with your stereo pairs. Make sure you don't have comb-filtering or phase cancellation of important (subjective) frequencies. Maintain a believable center of your 'phantom image'. Shifting phase slightly (moving the mic while tracking or delay nudge while mixing) on one m...

It's usually a good idea to check your drum phase situation in mono, also - any cancellation will be much more obvious.

But i've dealt with the "boss metal zone pedals with all the mids scooped out" way too many times in my life... and I actually was a victim of that use when younger as well! I run into these guys a lot in live sound too. Mostly younger kids who just don't know better. I call em "Guitar Center" band...

I just had my first B-15 studio experience last month... it was fantastic. I was surprised at how much low end we got out of that thing. We had to keep the amp volume quite low, because I played a 5-string tuned down a whole step (low A - 27.5 fricking Hz fundamental!), the the little 12-inch speake...
