Yeah the drums need redone. I kind of wonder about using a more orchestra based arrangement (timpanis, etc). But using brushes should back them off well.

Tapes? If I may...why tapes? I was having a hard time finding a working deck to listen to my old tapes, so I could throw them away. Cassettes were pretty worthless back when big labels were selling them. Recording onto tape...yeah, but releasing tapes?

The Great Lake Swimmers recorded one of their albums in a silo. The crickets outside get louder throughout the album. I guess I don't remember how it sounds, remember reading about it in Tape Op sometime last year.

Apples work pretty well. Does it matter what type? I like granny smiths. Also, if the singer sounds good live try recording like that. Maybe even get the singer away from the mic so the smacks aren't as audible. At some point it is the singer's mic or singing technique and it should be fixed.
