I have been happy with the fig 8 method; also I have gotten interesting sounds with 3 mics, eg various dynamics at the guitar neck joint, lower bout, and voice; also a stereo mic about three feet away in a smallish room seems to be sounding good to me revently. I guess you could do three fig 8 mics ...

been using an intel x25v for a year. i use it as data drive and a few years old seagate 2.5 inch drive for os. no problems here. i use the ssd as data because i had trouble getting win xp to install on it. also the laptop drive seemed to be a bit slow for data drive, and as os it's fast enough for m...

I've been really enjoying a porta 03 mk ii recently. it seems to have traded away some of the 02's routing for noise reduction, which i'm not sure i like, but making straight 4 track recordings with limited ability to punch in is great after years of following the computer down the mouse hole. i thi...

if what you want is out of copyright, check out imslp and other archives of scans of old music. they have huge amounts of decent quality sheet music for free.

when asked about some Avenson omnis (which look like rayguns) I just explained what they were in fairly technical detail, what kind of instruments I liked to record with them, etc, and went on my merry way. I think they're looking for strange behaviors as much as anything.

Mr. Mantra brings up a good point. The question may not always be of specialization for the sake of success, but can be of including - or, in his adams example, excluding - another point of view precisely because of the perspective of that view. Also, this quote seems to nicely bring together the id...

The best thing to do is to just avoid using software that trashes your system. use foobar2000 instead of itunes, open office instead of microsoft office, and most especially get rid of Adobe Reader and use SumatraPDF. Be as stingy as possible whenever you install anything, and uncheck all the "quick...

I think you can probably run the headphone out of your stereo amp/receiver into your powered speakers without much trouble. It's not elegant, but it should work - I've done it using the headphone out of an audio interface. The headphone out is unbalanced, so you might have to fiddle around a bit. Yo...

Ansel Adams

On the back page subject of specialization - photographers like Ansel Adams do in fact master elements of their craft from conception through capture and presentation, making their own prints, etc. The proliferation of cheap photo gear has enabled many more people to fail at photography, but it hasn...
