i hope electro harmonix has good customer service

i just plugged in my brand new 12AY7 pre and it totally burned up immediately - started smoking, wouldn't pass signal when i tried it later. oh and the power light stayed lit for about 5 min after the 30 seconds or so i had it plugged in. ugh... was really looking forward to using this, too.

i actually bought two of the same machine. they're both in good shape (recent jrf head reports all 80-90%). much as i'd like to keep em both - if only to use the other for parts - i purchased them both under the assumption that i'd sell the one for almost as much as i paid for the set. hmmmm. i coul...

i guess i'm just wondering where they sit in relation to my tascam ms-16. have i made a lateral move, save the extra tracks? perhaps i should note that i've been perfectly happy with my ms-16. and i know it's not gonna be a studer or anything. but how do these compare to otari stuff? that's really t...

i'd love to just take it off bus 7-8 or something, but that poses problems in that i send the subgroups to my mix almost always. i use them for boosting parts, parallel compression, etc. i'm gonna try the inserts. i just wish there was some kind of accessible pot somewhere i could adjust, though the...

Soundcraft Ghost question

OK, my Ghost is in need of servicing - if anyone can recommend someone in the Philadelphia area, please let me know. I've had a helluva time finding someone. Most of the things are small and not a big deal. However, I'm losing about 2dB out of the left channel on my main outs into my burner. I'm pos...

help an analog guy out

ok, i have been recording in the analog realm for the last 8 or 9 years, but i have been doing some basic editing/"mastering" in nuendo and wavelab for the last few years, so i'm not entirely familiar. i guess my question as i'm building my mix - i want to use subgroups just for simplicity and for s...

i probably average about 30 - 40 projects a year. some are LPs, some are EPs some are demos/comp tracks. it's kind of all over the place. i would guess i do about 15 LPs per year. but these are also punk/hc bands mostly, so admittedly a lot of these are done over a weekend.

Does this sound like my heads are going?

ok, so i have a Tascam MS16. the last time i had it serviced was just about three years ago - major overhaul, relapped the heads, replaced all kinds of stuff. it's been working great ever since. when i had the heads relapped, jrf told me they probably would not be able to relap them again (that this...

i think it has been suggested previously on this thread, but i would definitely buy used. you can get a far nicer kit for the same money used than you would buying new. so forget about the guitar center card. their used stuff is all horribly overpriced anyway. if you record rock stuff, i'd try and s...

i've had good results on bass cabs, female vocals sometimes, and acoustic guitars. i usually use them as overheads, though.

anyone else?

anyone else notice 16x16 floor toms usually having a weird resonance - like a weird low end surge after the initial attack? it's different on all drums, sure. but i can't remember a 16x16 tom NOT doing that for me. i have a '72 Rogers maple, an early 80s Tama Granstar custom birch, and some older Lu...
