Re: diy mics - big fun for all!

20-35 watts would be fine. You just have to be quick, which is where a hotter iron actually helps.

Re: Famous synth sounds of The Who

In my town, I am involved in what we call the Green Street Music Series. Long story short, we assemble a band of the who's who of original bands, and learn 50 songs by an artist/band, and arrange for over 30 different singers from the local scene, folkies to rappers to metal screamers, to come up a...

Re: Famous synth sounds of The Who

Dig up Townshend's "Who Came First" compilation/demos CD... it has some of the synthesizer compositions in fairly original form.

Re: how rediculously far have your DIY leanings gone?!

DIY is great, especially for those times when you have more time than money... that's usually when I've done the most stuff. It also gets you into electronic repair, which is definitely worth knowing.

Re: How do the big studios do it?

Interesting times, certainly. Perhaps this era is like the 60's, when all the kids were buying cheap guitars and forming bands... the then question of "so what exactly are the chords to "Louie Louie" is now "how can I record for $89?". The question for us then is "how can we make a living off this t...

Re: Grooves that shouldn't...

What songs can you cats think of that just have a killer pocket, but they're not necessarily intended to be a dance tune? Tune I've been working on lately fits that pretty well: Rickie Lee Jones, "Chuck E's in Love". OK, Steve Gadd on drums is a pretty obvious way to put it right dead-nuts in the p...

Re: How do the big studios do it?

Damned interesting discussions here... Going back to the original question, I'd throw this out: "Look at the big studios over x years and see whether they actually DO do it". There are always dumbies getting into showbiz, with a wad of cash that eventually runs out. A lot of big ventures work that w...

Re: Recapping stuff - WILL IT NEVER END?!?!?

I've got an ESR meter, and it did tell me the caps were going bad. For judging the condition of caps, how does an ESR meter work compared to the capacitance setting on a multimeter? I mean, not _how_ does it work, but how well does it work, and is the capacitance setting on a multimeter helpful at ...

Re: Recapping stuff - WILL IT NEVER END?!?!?

This is the ESR meter I use: http://www.awiz.com/cwinfo.htm $180, and it sure looks DIY. Works pretty well, though, was recommended by a serious repair guy I know. I use mine a lot, usually finding that the caps are OK. I was initially disappointed, thinking that this thing would save me a lot of tr...

Re: Recapping stuff - WILL IT NEVER END?!?!?

I've got an ESR meter, and it did tell me the caps were going bad. Not terribly so; maybe 5 of the 6 caps I changed were showing an ESR of 5-10 ohms, while the new caps were 1-3 ohms. But it made a enough of a difference that the meter had become unusable. Yeah, I've fixed cracked solder joints befo...

Recapping stuff - WILL IT NEVER END?!?!?

Sheesh. Today I recapped my Boss TU-12 tuner (vintage mid-80's?), and sure enough, it started working correctly again. Except for the two tiny ones that were hidden under the meter... need to order a couple more tiny little 10uF caps. Those apparently work with the built-in mic. Guess what one funct...

Re: Banjo Recording?

A banjo is basically a drum... really, I swear! So you want something that can handle LOUD transients, and while you don't want it to push the high end you don't want to neglect it either. I guess try a few things in the "mics that can handle loud stuff" category, and by all means use the pad if the...

Re: diy mics - big fun for all!

Anybody have a problem with not getting much high end? I built a pair a while ago, and they both sound "dark" in a ribbon mic kinda way. I know they're not supposed to be bright like a Chinese condenser, but they sound like they have a blanket over 'em. Any idea what I might have screwed up? Do bot...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 1-27-04

I think I've figured out the trick to using the Digi-Key catalog (works with Mouser, too): Have your computer nearby... the website has a pretty good search function. Do a search for the most basic value... "12K", and that'll get you close. From the list you get you'll able narrow stuff down quickly...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 1-27-04

I'm another DigiKey catalog victim... I do like DIY, but when it comes to sitting down with the catalog and ordering EVERY FREAKING PART... well, it's tough.

Had to shovel about 5-6 inches of snow out of my driveway, too. Got some nice snow here in Michigan, probably more than normal at this point.
