Re: really technical question about 12ax7 in preamp of gtr a

First change I'd make to your approach would be to set it up as adding/subtracting a capacitor instead of trying to swap the complete network. Set it up with the lower value of cap as always connected, then have a switched cap that makes up the bigger value. Put the switch on the ground side, maybe?...

Re: Playback Mediums for Live shows

With CDs and MDs they would likely want a "pro" playback deck to provide more on-the-button starts and such.

Maybe look for an old stereo reel-to-reel deck? Cheap to use, fairly reliable, even looks cool.

Re: Clara Peller vs. Jim Varney

Jim Varney rocked... I saw "Ernest Saves Christmas" a few years back and he played a bunch of different (and all very funny) characters.

Re: Can you recommend a decent chair for the studio?

Get a couple of different chairs, and move back and forth once in a while. I've found my lifetime chair, but they stopped making them in the 50's, and no you can't have my spare. ;) I also like those kneeling chairs and/or the big exercise ball used as a chair. Those tend to force decent posture and...

Re: You know you're in trouble when...

The trouble with doing bar sound is that you have to like being in bars... which drastically reduces the pool of qualified sound techs.

Re: What are you building?

A couple channels of mic preamp from the recent TapeOp J-FET project. One or more of those interesting mp3forkidz multi-pattern mics.

Why not just use a big Polish sausage as your mix buss?

Re: DIY mix-buss?

Granted that opamps are not perfect.

Still, an opamp summer can be prototype with Radio Shack parts and powered from a couple 9v batteries... a pretty painless way to start.

I read some interview where Waits talked about recording the innards of big rocking chairs... old Lay-Z-Boy types of things. I'm pretty sure that's the sound at the beginning of "Murder in the Red Barn" from Bone Machine.

Re: DIY mix-buss?

For the simplest mix buss I'd recommend an op-amp. Basically you set up the simplest inverting amplifier circuit, say 10K resistor on the input and on the feedback loop. The actual inverting in becomes a "virtual ground"... which means you can just add more inputs with more 10K resistors, and there ...

Re: Studios using plurality when there's really just one guy

After a day of further thought, I would suggest the following version of the "Silence of the Lambs" quote:

"It sings in tune or else it gets the hose again."
