Help me make a really crummy kickdrum sound into a good one
i'm helping a friend out with a mix, and the kick drum sound that he recorded is pretty bad. very mid-rangy with no real boom or attack at all. and you can hear a creeking sound from his pedal. i just want to thicken it up and make it loud and punchy. there's a lot of heavy distorted guitars going o...

The point is that you process the signal in parallel to itself. If that makes sense. /Jonas this helps, but please explain what you mean by "parallel to itself" more specifically. i'm not sure if you mean, process the copy in the same way as the original signal, or do it in sort of an opposite (mir...

The really interesting one is using a combination of parrallell compression and M/S.. could you please elaborate further on "parallel compression"? i'm not sure i understand what you mean by that. also, how would you describe "M/S" to a student? (cause i'm kind of understanding what is meant, but f...

Re: kick drumsounds that are awesome
Another one that I love is on Isis' Oceanic...very cool. -justin such a fucking great album. "panopticon" is my favorite by them, but "oceanic" is a near tie. some of my other favorite (kick) drum sounds: Primus: "the brown album", "pork soda" Meshuggah: "nothing" Alice in Chains: "jar of flies" De...

As for the compressors, if you have the standard pack of plugs that Digi includes, you should have a Focusrite compressor in there too which has adjustable threshold and ratio in the ranges I mentioned. -Jeremy the regular ol' digi compressor has the ability to do it. i set it to 1.50:1 like you su...

Make sure that you're compressors are linked or that your overheads are on a stereo channel so that when one side fires, they both do, otherwise your image will wander left to right as one side is pushed louder or softer than the other. As for the tones you're seeking, it reducing lows to achieve '...

I always just time the release so that the thwack of the snare and toms comes through, but with a slow attack as well, to get the cymbals to "slow down." I hardly ever EQ the OH at all. Depends greatly on the style of music and all the other myriad of variables inherent.... BUT: I still hardly ever...

COMPRESSING OVERHEADS....
i'm sure some of you have tried this out.... just wanted to see if you had any tips. i'm working with the Bombfactory 1176 plug in on pro-tools. i'm basically looking to make the overheads sound very textural and warm (if that makes any sense), as opposed to being really on top of the kit. i've been...

i hate auto-tune. i'm the type to say that if you can't sing your part right, you shouldn't be singing it at all, or find a register that is more comfortable. but on the other hand, i agree with previous replies that making the artist happy is a priority. i've only used it on one project (usually i ...

Re: Me too...
I've also been looking at monitors in that range and have been looking mostly at: Event TR8-N Alesis m1 active 620 M-Audio BX8A any thoughts? love, B i was just checking out the TR 8-N's. i'm curious as to whether or not having a 6" as opposed to an 8" woofer would make enough difference to justify...

i usually use at least 3 mics when doing guitar tracks. my favorite mic for heavily distorted guitars has always been the 421. i recently picked up an e609 to use as a live mic when i play out rather than the usual 57, and i've been using that for recording as well. i find that the blend between the...
