Xon - be sure to do your studio construction either with the blessing of the city inspectors, or move heaven and earth to make sure you don't get caught. We did ours to city code and had licensed installers for HVAC and electrical, but we didn't get prior approval and city hall was pretty mad when w...

Re: Phase question
helstab, can you make a little polarity gender-mender out of a short length of cable and a couple of XLR's? Wire one XLR with pin 2 hot, and swap the hot lead on the other. Make sure you mark it as reversed polarity! Keep it handy when you set up mics so you can plug it in your signal chain to check...

Re: Room-Miking Percussion tracks
All the time. Sound travels about 1 foot every millisecond (not exactly and it can change based on altitude, temperature, humidity and probably a buncha other stuff I'm too stupid to know about, but 1 ft/msec is easy to remember) so you get a delay for a distance mic. Sometime the delay is cool (lik...

Re: Recording drums with two mics
I'm kinda with Todd on the kick and overhead combination for a two mic job. I love a good deep kick sound thudding my chest prolly as much as Trashy loves his crackin' snare. For me, the overhead is usually a LD condensor (Sony C37P is usually my first choice), and kick is something way directional....

Re: Loveless is quiet...and loud
I too heard "Loveless" many years ago (right after it came out actually) and it didn't do much for me. Like others here, I put it on last night to reaquaint myself with it, and see if I could find the magic that people who know way more than me hear. At lower volumes I thought it was o.k. but the dr...

First, it gotta be all natural not that kid stuff full of sugar. Why? Adding yer own sugar is better. With that in mind: Chunky for PB and brown sugar, but use the creamy for liquid sugars like honey or (my favorite) molasses. The chunks can leave gaps that lets the mole's asses leak out and that ai...

Re: So anyways...
Not much you can do about that other than try your hardest to continue to be nice to the folks at the bigger studio. If ya got one person at the bigger establishment that yer on good terms with, invite 'em over and show 'em what yer doing and explain yer goals. Competition is rough in this business,...

Re: Strangest Studio Techniques U Ever Used?
Somehow, we acquired a large (about 20" diameter) hollow plastic sphere that was originally intended as a globe for some kinda light. Has a hole in the top for the bulb, perfect size for a mic. Set it on a carpet, shoved an omni in the hole, and had the percussionist play his parts right in front of...

Re: Miking Brushed Drums (on a budget of course)
Got access to an omni-directional mic? Thing about brushes is the lack of a consistant and small target area, which is compounded by possible low playing volume. Get a directional mic real close to pick up the low volume playing and you get some proximity effect low end bump which may not be so good...

Re: Analog semi-pro going to PC DAW- suggestions?
I'll bite on the M-audio Delta 1010/Cool Edit Pro option. I've been running a PC Daw at home with this combo for almost 4 years now with no real problems at all. Mind you, I have a 500MHz P3 running Win98Lite so the ASIO drivers don't work too well. I don't use MIDI so it's never bothered me. I like...
