Do you know what he costs to mix a song? More than most people's entire album budgets are. wow, so if he's expensive he MUST be good! Yeah, his discography isn't so bad. I mean, at least a FEW people like his work... http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&searchlink=ANDY|WALLACE&sql=11:wzftxqrgl...

give me lots of room. fuck myspace and computer speakers and mp3s and anything else that has contributed to the downfall of great records. if doesn't work in this age i know i'm doing something right. Well there is a famous example of this.... Butch Vig, in spite of his brilliant production on Neve...

so in your opinion everyone should be listening to more current FM radio and trying to make our stuff sound like that? This is not what I was saying at all. I, personally, went through a 15 year period where I hardly ever listened to FM radio (aside from NPR) and was completely unaware of any new p...

For the sake of argument: Not everybody is trying to make commercial releases. Also, not everybody feels that the sound of modern commercial releases is something to which we necessarily should all aspire. I totally do not think 60s Rudy Van Gelder recordings are somehow inferior to modern commerci...

I'm not trying to piss on your parade here, but the drums DO sound washed out and don't really have a strong center image. i don't see how it's washed out when you can clearly hear every note i play, and the drums aren't covering up everything else in the mix, but hey, we can just disagree. On smal...

doesn't sound phasey to me but whatevs. my point was just...for the purpose of this discussion, here's a song with the omni room mics stupidly compressed and really loud in the mix and it doesn't sound washed out or uncentered. IMO. I'm not trying to piss on your parade here, but the drums DO sound...

I'd vote for the Topaz. Good routing and very usable EQ. You can do modern mixes on it without having to stress to much. The mic amps are pretty crunchy and have very little dynamics, but that is part of the boards "sound." I just wish soundtracs put their mic/line amps from their earlier mid level ...

I'd say it depends. Every producer is different and every band has different needs. I think its great if you can get a "drum producer" (I've seen that happen a few times) if your regular producer isn't that on top of things. Butch Vig springs to mind as a drummer/producer, and he's no slouch obvious...

ok sorry, i got totally sidetracked yesterday.... here's a mix in progress...just a lazy late night jam, i'm playing drums and rhodes, my friend is on bass and monosynth and the intro drums. the room mics come and go, easy to hear the difference...sorry it's kinda quiet... disclaimer: i suck at the...

Really? To me, the long reverbs are very grainy in that box. Extremely Japanese-sounding. I mean, I like it and it's pleasant, but that's what I hear. My favorite reverbs in that box are the shorter rooms, but whenever I do use some of the longer 'verbs, usually the first thing I do is go in and sh...

I guess I don't really do the sort of roomy indie drum sounds that everyone seems to be doing now a days.

not really.
Well by design, an omni is going to give you more early reflections in a small room than a mic with a tighter pattern. I mean that is sort of the nature of their designs...

I've been thinking about this room mic business while mixing the past two days. I was trying to figure out when I stopped using omni/stereo room mics and why. I think the main reason is because the main thing I want from the room is kick and snare and with the kick and snare in the mix, the primary ...
