I'd vote for the Topaz. Good routing and very usable EQ. You can do modern mixes on it without having to stress to much. The mic amps are pretty crunchy and have very little dynamics, but that is part of the boards "sound." I just wish soundtracs put their mic/line amps from their earlier mid level ...

I'd say it depends. Every producer is different and every band has different needs. I think its great if you can get a "drum producer" (I've seen that happen a few times) if your regular producer isn't that on top of things. Butch Vig springs to mind as a drummer/producer, and he's no slouch obvious...
