My Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity just showed up. Pretty stoked to take it home and try it out. I think you'll love it. I've had mine for a year or so, and I use it every time I record. The DI is fantastic for bass. Hell yes! That is exactly what I wanted to hear. I'm gonna do some bass tracking t...

At least the two artists you mention (Owl City & Imogen Heap) are using it in an interesting way See, I don't really think they are. They're using it as a vocoder pretty much. Those have been around before that horrible Cher song. And really, it's just my opinion of the use of vocoders. To me, if i...

Try lift the ground on the instrument cable that's running into the bass amp.

Edit:

Wait, that's probably gonna give you a horrible buzz. I'm pretty sure it's the ground on your computer that's causing the problem. Try lifting it there or on the di like you were saying before and that should fix it.

Sounds like you're doing the right things with eq. Reamping probably wont work unless you have a clean di signal. Live and learn. Take the advice of the above posters and really dial back on the distortion next time (if you can talk the guitarists into it). Take time to audition the tracks and play ...

It's simple enough to wire it properly so that proper polarity is maintained.

Right. But you have to know if the transformer inverts polarity or not to know which is the right way to wire it up.

You shouldn't be able the hear a difference in conductor size. Where the difference comes in is in the quality of the shielding and the capacitance of the cable.

You'd have to be careful about phase with that one. Some transformers invert polarity and there might be a slight phase shift if not.

Agreed. Very cool. Hats off to TapeOp for the new issue. I loved that article and the one from Tom Day. I was gonna ask for more DIY projects and schematics and things for future issues. Definitely cool.

I don't understand why people *record* using multi-speaker cabs at all. Don't you get phasing issues just from the cab itself? Or does that create a more complex sound at the microphone that's euphonic for a lot of people. I'm not criticizing the technique. It's just something that's always seemed ...

I'm gonna guess you're sitting right in a null in the lower frequencies. If there's no room to install treatment: One thing I did that I read in an old issue of tape op was to set a synth to sine wave and start way down on the scale and slowly walk up. You will hear which notes are getting canceled ...
