Re: Are You Happy??
good question. I agree that life's point is probably not just to be happy. In fact, the happier you are the more blind you may be. Ignorance = bliss? Seems true to me. I'm working on trying to not be a self-centered, oblivious moron. Tough job. For some reason, most of the guys I hang out with (and ...

Re: poll: what do you do?
I teach 8th graders US History by day and hang with the wife/dabble in my recording studio/read/run/sleep at night. Lately I have been leading worship services at our church and trying desperately to find songs that allow people to enter into worship without the cheesy trappings of the mainstream Ch...

Re: Yet more mixing board advice needed
I have a Soundcraft M8 which I like for the eq, but would recommend the M12, which has twelve channels including preamp and direct out for each. This would allow you to monitor 8 channels back from the tape machine and have four left over for tracking (if you can live with only four - otherwise you ...

Re: HEY EVERYONE: Can we keep it in the right forum?
Ok - "bitching" might have a bit of an overstatement. I really didn't intend malice when I wrote it. My point was (and is) that the computer forum is not working because of its design and/or the habits of the users on this board. I do not believe that asking people to write in that forum will work -...

Re: HEY EVERYONE: Can we keep it in the right forum?
Last count: General Recording posts to date: 2549 This #%^ Computer posts to date: 87 The computer forum doesn't seem to have a lot of "buy in". I'm no marketing genius, but I'm betting that bitching at the users is not a way to get them to click down the list and post their message in the lonely 'o...

Re: Soundcraft Spirit M12, your thoughts please?
I have an m8 that I use with a 1/2 inch 8 track. I have not been blown away by the preamps (which are the same as the ghost), but I do love the eq - very powerful. The problem I have had is with returns from the 8 track. The m series all have direct outs, but do not have a dedicated line back in. In...

I have a GnL SC-3, which is now discontinued, but which sounds incredible through my tweeked through my souped fender deluxe.
I love GnL guitars, but I love the SC-3 the best.

Re: drum advice for 8-track
Mono can definitely work but I agree with SoftSupply that the more you have to play with BEFORE mixing to mono the better. For some reason I always think drums are the most important part (and I'm not the drummer), so I will give them three tracks in the mix (kick, snare and overhead). I like to be ...

Re: Reel to Reel recommendations?
Otari makes two and four track machines. They are going pretty cheap these days as well (heck, you might even be able to get the 1/2" 8 track for around 500!). You need to think about track width. 1/4" two track is fine, 1/4" four track is pushing it (imo). I have not had very many problems with ser...

Firewire Interface
Ok - I know this has been talked about recently, but I need straight up opinions. Running from an Otari 5050 8 track into an imac. What do you recommend? The review of Metric Halo's 2882 in the last issue was nice, but the unit is pricey. Someone mentioned elsewhere that 192 is available in 2 track ...

Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.
Tchad Blake made Joseph Arthur's last album sound huge, and fantastic. I also agree with Sheryl Crow's second album - easily her best. Her voice sounds incredible. Hum? That was done at Pogo studios - just down the street. Yeah! The Beta Band - 3 eps, Edith Frost's Wonder Wonder, and Soft Bulletin -...

Re: other recording magazines that you guys read?
I have a love/hate relationship with electronic musician magazine. Some months it seems that every article is relevant, and other months I literally just throw it away. It helped in the beginning ... and they sometimes have neat diagrams of like someone's studio layout.
