Re: Rackmount gear, proximity & interference

Probably magnetic coupling between transformers. The power transformer for the Pultec is probably in the same spot as a signal transformer in the Aurora.

Really hard to stop with just regular metal rack enclosures, but distance will take care of the problem.

Re: Mid-quality compressors vs Logic's ?

I have a dbx 1066, and the one recent use I've found for it is recording my own vocals. I have a pair of custom-molded IEM earbuds, and it's tricky to get the levels right since my hearing is rather sensitive. But I found if I compressed my vocal mic I could make it work.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Anyone know what J. Robert Lennon aka inverseroom is up to these days? (Recent events notwithstanding..) This news is a decade old, but new to me: I decided, out of boredom to start watching a detective show called Unforgettable, which ran from 2011-2016. I'm watching the credits roll by as the fir...

Re: Audacity updated

I still use it for converting audio file formats. But I know at least one person who actually assembles and mixes projects using it.

I'm skeptical of ear candling.
Me too. The science is dubious at best, plus it's been debunked by professionals. All that gross stuff that it "sucks out" is just byproducts of the ear candle itself.

Re: Ddistributing Songs

An "album" generally refers to a collection of things stuck together, so it makes sense that it's still the best way to describe a set of songs meant to be heard together and in order. I do still generally listen to albums, though much like the vinyl days I might only listen to one "side" instead of...

Re: Recommend me a wild delay pedal

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Realistic Sound Mangler- I mean Realistic Electronic Reverb. Mine doesn't give pristine, beautiful delays and reverbs. Nope. It sounds like it looks- cheap and plasticky. But it's a whole lot of fun! Great for gritty, lo-fi analog reverb & delay effects. It al...

I'm definitely not saying people should be lazy and expect their ME to fix their shit! I'm just saying I don't give people demerits if I have to engage an eq. :D
Maybe another way to look at it is how much of your budget (mixing time) you want to spend doing the ME's job.

Re: mastering, limiter, diy.

So I'm "mastering", as it were, as if I was living in the 1950's. Yeah talk to Cosimo Matassa about the "arrogance" of mixing live to acetate. :) Given the past year I'd be happy to try mixing live to just about any medium. :? What I meant was that I was basically mixing for really crappy mono repr...

Mixerman's recent book suggests that albums are a waste of time and money for artists these days.

Despite my " sausage mic" comment above I always label it as the heart mic. On an analog track sheet it's just a heart with an arrow through it. If pro tools allowed emoji labelling I'd do it there to.
Can you use the full Unicode character set?

Re: mastering, limiter, diy.

Are we basically leaving the batch mode of distributing songs and instead going pipeline? I've been doing a little bit of virtual-service church music, and by the time everybody has sent in their parts and I've mixed it, it might already be Friday. And almost everybody who ends up hearing the music ...

After doing the stuff everyone's described above, and easy way to hit a target loudness level is with Ozone's Maximizer module: https://www.izotope.com/en/products/ozone/features/maximizer.html Enter a target level in LUFS (like the Spotify standard of -14), click "learn threshold," let your song p...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Yeah, I'm bored, so here's a thought: What if, instead of straight masonite, you used pegboard? And then filled the cavity with fiberglass or recycled denim insulation or whatever? And then, to make things doubly deflective, you nail curved or angled pieces of corner to the plywood sheet so that an...
