I think that machine can sync with MTC. That would be the best way to get in/out of the computer in sync. Make the Akai the master and slave the computer to it (tell it to play/record starting at the time code point a few seconds before the start of the song on the Akai). Then when you need to get b...

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the MCI (have only used 24 tracks).

You should have some great results with the ampex as long as you are comfortable with alignments...and have patience :)

I don't know if there is a generic, "accepted" format. But we have always kept sheets made in excel which list the instrument, channel number, whether it's insert or directly patched from tape, and then boxes to the right with room for the outboard in order of use. Also, after years of toiling away ...

I have an old Ampex 440c which was originally a 4 track deck used for cassette dups master. I had new headstack put on it by John French (JRF Magnetics) and the thing now sounds amazing. ...here's the thing...(and there is always a thing!). The machine is old and quirky. For one, it doesn't have a t...

For what it's worth: I have always powered up interfaces first, then powered up the computer - and then powered down in the exact opposite order. So computer turned off, then the interfaces. Can't for the life of me remember where I learned that - but it has worked for as long as I can remember (or ...

I got a pair of the Nady RSM-4s and had them modded (they sounded pretty damn good before the mod) - I love these mics. There are times that I feel guilty about picking them over MUCH more expensive mics that I have - strictly because we are conditioned to feel that more expensive is better. Definit...

Another vote for the Furman single rack space unit. best $90 we spent. No idea what they go for now.

I also have a great stand alone box (not as big as an amp-top type model) called a Lafayette that I love. More "kooky" than a straight spring - but has a great sound.

Remember that if you opt for the "moreme" headphones from Mercenary, you will absolutely need headphone extenders. The attached cable is VERY short (an oversight that surprised me considering the thoughtfulness that seemed to go into these cans) and will need to be extended, unless the player is sit...

I only read it quickly, but I really don't see how this thing works. I mean, of course everyone would want this thing if it can make good on the promises - but what is it actually doing?

Is it different than sync tape machine to Pro Tools?

Maybe I'm missing something...or everything :)

Another vote for picking a pair of monitors (whatever they may be) and sticking with them long enough to become comfortable on them.

I think this approach, in the end, outweighs some large investments.

I had the same type of situation with my studio monitors a few years back. I had owned the Events forever, and it seemed like maybe it was time to upgrade. Went to Dale Pro Audio in the city, and listened to a ton of stuff, on a ton of stuff on a ton of speakers in their monitor room. In the end, I ...

Amen brother! Obviously everyone has an opinion, and any new buyer should consider all of our thoughts with a grain of salt... But it never hurts to throw your experience into the ring, see if someone might save themselves some heart ache in the end. Final word should always be "just listen to the m...

If you are looking for "vibe" but not specifically distorted - I would suggest the ADR Compex Stereo. The units can be a bit flaky from serial number to serial number - but after a bit of tweaking - they are amazing. A friend (producer/engineer) who works at my studio a lot has mixed every record th...

Alto music in Middletown, NY is really great. When we upgraded to HD (FINALLY!) this past year, we called them - and there was no haggling, the guy just gave me the best price, hands down. Funny thing was, I got the suggestion from the east coast rep from Digi - and I was buying used and 3rd party g...

I use Event 20/20 BAS and NS-10s at the studio - but for home I needed a pair that was self-powered, small and cheap. I have a small office/editing space, and anything 8" would have been overkill. So I did the same thing at Guitar Center - best mixes in the little room with all the pairs they had th...
