Some stuff to read if interested in DIY Gear

Hey readers! I'm busting in on Tim's post to clarify this thread. Please only post titles of books or websites (with links please) on this thread. I cleaned out a bunch of "Great book" and "Great thread" posts from this to make sure it is all content. Thanks! -LC, your soldering moderator PS: For a...

You know, I like this idea so much that I might be persuaded into buying some exhibitor space, but only on the condition that we go to Montreal. No kidding.

Searchable Index?

I'd really like to see a searchable index of the full contents of the magazine, the whole way back to issue #1, especially the CD and gear reviews. As if you didn't have enough to do already.

Topic: How hard is it to build a power supply?

A basic bipolar power supply is an easy project, but things get a bit more complicated if you need phantom power. This supply adds a full wave voltage doubler and a third regulator to produce a 48V output from a common split secondary transformer. To get +/-15V out of it, you'll have to change R3/R6...

What about the SCA stuff? ... Has anybody out there endeavored to do this as their first project? Lots of people with very little experience have built them successfully, but I don't think any mic preamp is a good project for an absolute beginner. To get a little practice soldering, try a kit from ...

It probably won't make much audible difference, but if you're looking for a project to build this would be a good one. Take a look at this Jensen schematic for a good way to do it. The most important thing is to use 1% or better resistors for R2 and R3. If these aren't well matched the CMRR of the p...

If I were going to try this, I think I'd look for a 1/4" consumer machine to cannibalize. You can get them cheap (or free) and the service manuals are not too hard to find. The heads are large enough to work with easily, and you'll already have the record and playback electronics, not to mention the...

I haven't fooled with them yet, but do you have the UAD-1 comps for comparison? I can say I'm pleased with the URS A and N EQs, though I'm not sure they're equal to the hype they've received.

Re: OSA or any external pre questions - help!

What are you monitoring through? It's possible the rest of your signal chain is preventing you hearing a significant difference. You may also want to try a phase cancellation test in your DAW to uncover the real difference between the two amps.

Re: Pacific Pro Audio R-one Ribbon mic?

As someone who's involved in importing and exporting expensive items on a regular basis, I'd suggest you all jump on PPA's offer before they think about it too long and change their minds. I guarantee whomever undertakes this project on their own is in for a bit of a shock when they're actually conf...

Re: DIY in-line mic pad/attenuator

For a general purpose pad for use with low impedance mics, the input impedance should be 1.5K and the output impedance 150. This avoids loading the mic unnecessarily, and will keep the mic pre behaving as if a mic were connected directly.

Re: buzzing transformers

Isolating the PSU transformer probably isn't too tough. It might be worth trying to isolate it from the chassis with some large rubber washers. Also, if the buzzing comes and goes it might be due to variations in your AC line, especially if you're on the same circuit with large inductive loads like ...
