Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Electro-Voice 641. Electro-Voice 641.jpg Rescued from my pack-rat younger self. It was in a music junk drawer, still with a mono 1/8" plug attached. I used to use it in college with a funky little cassette recorder, sort of a proto-Walkman voice dictation thing. Sounds pretty similar to a 635a. I or...

Why is it that when an audio device picks up a radio station, at least 70% of the time it's Spanish language?
Because a lot the AM stations are non-English. It's a cheaper platform if you don't have a huge audience. It's also the kind of signal that can be accidentally decoded by audio gear.

If there was ever a situation that screamed "rent what you need for the session", this would be it.

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

Then again as pointed out earlier, many people (dare I say "kids") that grew up on that kind of music, now expect to hear that and maybe a band with a real band groove, would sound weird to them? Never forget that the "kids" are also digging into their parents' record collections and sometimes bein...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

Not sure whether we missed the point on the 24 tracks of delays story. My guess would be that somebody with nearly infinite budget and a desire to figure out every tiny aspect of the process might try such a thing as an experiment. What would happen if the snare was 5mS early all the time? What if t...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

Deliberate distortion on the vocals. Not like something that's a little fuzzy, but heavy distortion. OK, I don't mind that in music that's heavy and full of other things that are distorted, but not in pop music.

Re: Sizing a PA for a Small Theater

If you're doing rock shows then rent an appropriate PA for each show, and make it part of that show's budget. The tech rider for the band will quite often list what is needed. Seriously, don't buy anything unless you're doing shows every week.

A pair of JBL 305P MKII monitors. Just fits on my desktop and a real pleasure to use for both monitoring and regular music listening. Also got some ISO130 stands to sit them on.
I've got a pair of the originals, and they are really nice.

Seen worse. Now you know what you're up against.

In the live sound world I use SMAART, and the usual rule of thumb is that you can EQ lumps down, but you can't fill in a hole. If you see a sharp dip, just move the mic a little and the dip will also change.

Re: Whatcha's workin on this weekender?

Cheesy little fake fiddle tune thing on guitar and mandolin, for postlude music. Decided that Reaper was a little too heavy-duty for this, as I didn't want to save rejected takes, so I did it in Acapella and then exported the tracks to Reaper for mixdown.

Re: monitor stands

A couple years ago I followed a fellow tapeopper's recipe and built my stands to custom height using PVC, wood, black paint, and sand. They look nice, they're heavy and they don't resonate. The search might reveal the basic plan if you're interested, I'd also be happy to see if I could turn it up. ...

Years ago I repaired a rhythm-macheenless one of those - I think it was like the jack and the switch, that kinda stuff. What a fun keyboard, I get that sound (more or less) with a Reface. There was a couple years around 2000 when I was fixing a bunch of those Farfisa and Vox things because they'd b...

Fuck. Good on you. I just lost my wife to breast cancer. It's a merciless disease. After 5 years of visits to the cancer hospital I've come away feeling like it's coming for all of us. Glad you're ok. Man, that's tough. I lost my mother to breast cancer, but my sister at least managed to beat it. H...

Re: Rackmount gear, proximity & interference

Probably magnetic coupling between transformers. The power transformer for the Pultec is probably in the same spot as a signal transformer in the Aurora.

Really hard to stop with just regular metal rack enclosures, but distance will take care of the problem.
