Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Those look cool. Can I ask what the materials are, and how you determined the exact size? Materials are 1/4" plywood for the base, thin strips of pine for the frame, and 1/8" hardboard (aka Masonite) for the curved surface. I'm mostly improvising on the dimensions, though. Working with stuff I alre...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Prototype #0, which was longer than the two shown, did a great job killing a particular flutter echo in my living room. But I need more, MOAR!!! Those look cool. Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Some assembly required, but all the parts are here. Aside from maybe wanting a bit of fiberglass fluff to fill the cavity and soak up lows, assuming I don't cheap out and just use old socks or something. IMG_1879.JPG IMG_1880.JPG These are still sort of prototypes, though I'm getting happier with my...

Re: Tom Mic Comparison

It's funny, the snare sounds better than the tom on the KSM141. Yeah, the bleed on each of the mics is so different, it's the most notable difference between the two Sennheisers, which is crazy because a 421 costs like 3 times as much. Makes sense to me. Controlling the pickup pattern is one of the...

Re: Favorite use for Tape Op ribbon

I've got one, but it rarely ever gets used. :(

Though just a couple days ago I took it apart to verify details about the layers of mesh and fabric. There was a question about that on a DIY microphone group.

Re: M/S guitars and other stuff

One of the big benefits of mid-side recordings is that the sound sums cleanly to mono by cancelling out the side signal. Any time you narrow the image you're getting into that territory.

RIP Rupert Neve

One of the most influential designers of recording gear has passed on. I'm not even going to try to summarize everything Mr. Neve did over many years as a designer and manufacturer. In my own little corner of the audio world, live sound, he even designed a processor that helps lectern mics and even ...

Re: RIP Chick Corea

"Three Quartets" was the first jazz record I ever bought - Corea, with Steve Gadd and Eddie Gomez as the killer rhythm section plus Michael Brecker.

I've actually worked with him, too - just a year or two ago, I did monitors for his band for a show. Still an amazing pianist.

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

If you followed my advice and bought more than one replacement, then put the extra into a little baggy and tape it to the side of the power supply.

Re: unclean electricity?

Can you plug in a long mic cable and take a sensitive mic into the "noisy" room to feel around for noise sources?

I recently acquired a new interface with an inline PSU, and I have to be careful to keep any mic lines away from that PSU.

Re: A polite linux request

For me Linux is worth the trouble as Windows 10 has some really big annoyances with the constant updating and such.

Reaper runs just fine on Linux, though you are likely to run into difficulties with 3rd party plugins.
