For me, watching the doc Inside Job made the reason behind the protests crystal clear.
Here's a trailer:

I think it boils down to people wondering who they can trust.

Yeah, the Kurz has the sampling option and has upgraded RAM. No vintage ROM but that's what the SCSI drive and cd-roms do (see the links in my ad.) Wurly, Rhodes and mellotron/chamberlin are well covered. Not to try to sell you on this, but it is pretty much hit record and play. An M1 will do the sa...

If there's a Mac available, I'd highly recommend Logic Studio and an M-Audio Oxygen keyboard. I just scored a 3rd gen Oxygen 25 for $60. It synced to Logic without a hitch. The Oxygen series has 49 and 61 key versions that go for under $200 I believe. Of course Logic Pro goes for 500 but Express is ...

Kurzweil K2600 - $850

76 semi-weighted keys, sampling option, external SCSI drive with Pyramid Sound cd-roms for vintage electric piano and mellotron (both programmed specifically for use with the K2600's slider controllers), plus Spectrasonics Distorted Reality2, "a one-of-a-kind library that explores an experimental wo...

For what it's worth, I did nothing but play in a band that did about 170 gigs a year for about six years. Made $110 a night for the first year, and $210 a night after that. And for a while, I was pretty satisfied. But the music wasn't my favorite, and as for the lifestyle...well, it got really borin...

Maybe I'm overly critical. I know I criticize my own songwriting to the point that I haven't put anything out there. But I watched James Taylor's One Man Band dvd last night and was amazed at how good he still is. I can't believe he would be spending his time, were he starting out today, on promotin...

Side note: someone was watching a video of the show I played last Friday. She was pretty perturbed that people were talking while I was playing. She was so perturbed, in fact, that she talked about how upset she was all through the video.  Oh, man. I can relate. I remember the first ti...

Exactly. In the case I was writing about, this was the one relatively quiet moment of the set. Scream your head off if you want to when the energy's high. I remember a Low concert being all but ruined by a group of Dirty Three fans sitting behind me. Of course they were completely silent for their b...

I was once playing a quiet piano solo with my old band in a small club with a foot-tall stage. Everyone was seemingly into it and were listening politely except this one dude about three heads away. He kept drunkenly yelling "WHOOO!", " FUCK YEAH!" and other encouragements at me. I put up with it fo...

Saw John Vanderslice last night

My girlfriend and I took in his show last night at the Doug Fir - our first time seeing him. As we were sitting on the sidelines, we could only see John from the chest up and a little bit of Jason Slota, the drummer's, head. By the second tune I was pretty sure I was hearing a Moog. Gradually we fig...

Have to say, kudos to Neil for the Yakus article, which is arguably more to the point of this thread. Had to Google and then go for the cached version of the Prosound Web article for some reason. But I also found a page of some fun anecdotes from various tracks - http://discog.fleetwoodmac.net/disco...

Okay - the drum talk starts in around 1'18". Nothing really jumped out at me. Shelly Yakus engineered. Jimmy Iovine talks a little bit about how he felt Stan's drumming was kind of plodding, Tom says they actually tried out different drummers but no one did it better. I dunno.

I'm not sure this will help, but hell...it can't hurt. Watch the documentary 'Running Down A Dream.' There's lots of footage of Damn The Torpedos being tracked, along with interviews with Iovine specifically talking about hat he had to do to improve Lynch's drum sound, starting with buying him a who...
