Copy on what Tony and Nick said.

I don't think flipping the tape every 30 minutes is necessary. Maybe once in the process would do.

oh and when I do convert I use CBR 320, and make sure the file has peaks under 0.03 dBvu . from my research VBR might be better, but it's really inconclusive. in addition I was reading that when compressing, if a song goes over 0.03 there can be added digital distortion that results in artifacts an...

If you're going to be in it for the long haul, I would recommend setting up a meeting at the studio with a trusted studio designer and builder. You can hire them to consult with for a few hours. I did this and it really worked well in understanding the scope of the undertaking in the planning stages...

I find that having uncompressed mixes generally makes for a smoother mastering experience. Are you referring to novice mix engineers here or mixers who are good at their craft. When I built my studio I used a similar product called tuff mass.

It was twice as thick and cost a buck a square foot.

Got it here: http://www.soundown.com/AI.htm
It works very good when combined with other sound proofing techniques.

The Mac Mini comes with a built in digital input, so you would just need to get the right cable to got between the dat and mac.. or if you already have an interface,. I would keep it digital if you're concerned about quality.
