Re: DBX 164 (balancing)
I've got a dbx 164 that I am sort of in love with (its basically an older, stereo version of the 163x). Anyhow it suddenly stopped passing signal. The gain reduction lights are still doing there thing and respond to the slider etc. Anyhow, this isn't a how to thread. What I am thinking of doing is ...

I see Avensons from time to time. A built Hamptone sold on ebay last week. Scarce doesn't always mean great...sometimes it means there are few items out there compared to the boatloads of mass produced gear. I mean, I'd venture than many more studios have 4033s in regular use than the Avenson mics.....

I'd email the guy to discuss it. He made a mistake, and would likely want to correct it. Someone else out there probably is holding your eq thinking "WTF? I bought some compressors..." You should only keep them if the seller agrees to it as well. Otherwise, it would be kind of shady on your part. Ho...

For a soundhole pickup, the Sunrise is really hard to beat. I don't care much for the Rare Earth by Fishman, but I do like their Neo-D Humbucker. Another nice combo is a blend of a Highlander pickup under the saddle, with a K&K Western soundboard transducer. You can blend them nicely. Which Martin d...

I'm an atheist, but you got to give it to some of those worship bands. They get up and play! Honestly where do you think funk, soul and even rock came from? Gospel music. Good ole lemme hear an amen, throw on some mahalia jackson gospel. With a side of greens. I hear the summit tube comps are suppo...

I wouldn't say the Sytek is leaps and bounds better, and I've owned both. The Sytek is great, and a great value. You'll want a set of inline mic pads as the pre doesn't have a pad and you can clip it sometimes. The RNP has more headroom and a DI on each channel. Sound wise the Sytek has the upper ha...

For $2000, given that the DPS has quite usable pres, I would consider the following list: Great River ME-1NV (single channel) or the Hamptone Jfet (two channels) That's the first grand spent...and you can go from a hefty clean, to a harmonically saturated thick. Then an AT 4047 for a LDC - really ha...

Let me begin - I'm a cheap bastard. That said, when there is a decent amount of wear in the first position, I almost always would advise a partial refret over just leveling. Here's the deal - A partial refret isn't expensive. You'll be taking alot of material off the higher frets if you simply do a ...

No direct outs or inserts on the 4 stereo channels. Hmm. I think that will be a dealbreaker for me on the Soundcraft. but there are direct outs and inserts on all of the mono channels, as well as an insert on the main outs... i haven't seen too many small format mixers that have direct outs on the ...

It's kinda like that shampoo commercial!!!! You can honest to Betsy feel it working and you can see the funky evidence as well. Maybe you're saying there is a danger?? As far as doing the job, they are for real. Was the "Pseudoscience" line a joke? As far as I can remember from junior high burning w...

I got to demo the unit with a UA rep and he told me specifically the pre's are, [yes based on UA designs], but not built by UA and yes there is a reverb available for monitoring so if you're tracking a singer they can hear themselves with reverb. As I said, the opinion about the pre not sounding al...
