Re: unbiased mic reviews
Productive night at the grand opening of the Albany Guitar Center... got an Oktava MK219 for $29, and a Bellari tube pre for $49. While neither's really top of the heap, I recorded my last disc a track at a time solely with an SM57 copy (on which I spent almost exactly as much as these 2 pieces), so...

Re: LP of your life.
Depends... The disc I just finished, Glorified Demos is the closest to me, as I wrote it, and it's introspective and in a way cathartic. If you meant "What album by someone other than you sums up your life or is closest to you on a personal level?", then either To Our Children's Children's Children ...

Re: echo chambers
Yeah - that's exactly what you can do. On the first 'Lord of the Rings' film, the sound team took a laptop loaded up with sound effects and brought it to a series of concrete tunnels in the hills of Wellington, New Zealand and used it as an echo chamber doing exactly that. Every room will give you d...

Re: Desert Island Albums...
Jim, if you're looking to get into the Small Faces, I'd suggest picking up the 2-disc compilation The Darlings of Wapping Wharf Launderette - it's got the complete Ogden's Nut Gone Flake album, as well as containing most of the album that preceded it, the rarities collection that followed it, and a ...

The Desert Island Five
American Beauty/Workingman's Dead - The Grateful Dead : 2-for-1 cassette bought at Record Town that never leaves my car (so how it would make it to a deserted island with me raises many deep questions) OK Computer - Radiohead Green - R.E.M. : accompanied me to Israel and on nearly every other trip ...

Re: Worst guitar tones ever
One of the "worst" tones I can think of offhand is Dave Navarro's scratchy solo on the Chili Peppers' Walkabout. It's absolutely ugly... and yet it fascinates me and I love it.

Re: Can someone answer some really basic questions for me?
1 : The basic idea is to get your tracks down as loudly as possible without clipping/distortion. There's no exact number to aim for, other than: If you're recording on an analog system, knocking the needle into the red is alright (in fact, folks often exploit that) - just try not to keep it pegged ...

Re: unbiased mic reviews
Glad to find this discussion going on. Those reviews were pretty helpful; there's a Guitar Center opening up near me (Albany, NY) on Thursday, and they're going to have Oktava MK-219s on sale for $29. I was afraid that was a too-good-to-be-true price, but all I've seen so far seems really favorable.

The new kid in town would (still) like your thoughts...
In addition to Without You and Sullivan Street , here's a few others: - From Now On - aiming for a ~1968 fuzzed-out feel; all electric guitars recorded using a Smokey amp miked from various orientations while inside a metal bucket. - Tonight - mid-sixties pop. Chunky acoustic strumming, and a semi-c...

Re: Baby Taylor acoustic guitar
A Baby Taylor's been on my want-list for quite a while (in part because you can get a lefty at no additional charge). To my recollection, listening to a sales clerk demo righties for me, all of the sitka spruce-topped Babies sounded very similar. While the exotic wood sides and back are visually ple...

Re: mellow mid-fi music
I really like these songs.
They seem well recorded, and though you say you needed to do a lot of EQing, I think it all sounds like a good blend. The only oddness was some buzz on "The Unlucky Doberman" in the right side of the stereo image.

Re: "ready-made" feedback guitar?
Sandpaper of almost any kind would likely be too much for the strings to deal with. On a real hurdy gurdy, they use a wheel that's been coated in rosin. Also, a real hurdy gurdy has keys to control the pitch of a few of the strings (like an autoharp) while other drone strings go all the time. Theore...

Re: Sixties Records
Astrodan makes some really good suggestions. Extreme stereo separation, with drums/bass hard-panned to one side and guitars/vocals hard-panned to the other side (or, for the really good singers: everything except the vocals to one side, and vocals/hand percussion to the other) is instant nostalgia. ...
