Gawd, I hate it when a Bluegrass band insists on using a single mic for recording! And I'm a Bluegrass musician!! Maybe that explains why I see so many Bluegrass people with only one ear...? Anyway, when I have this situation I explain to them that we can have the single mic feel while getti...

AKG D125 for studio use?

I purchased one of these mics many years ago for live performances and recently re-discovered it hidden away in a bunch of my stuff. After doin a Google search, it appears to be used in many studios, but I can't find any info as to WHAT it's used on etc. Do any of you have any studio experience with...

In this situation (a vocalist with lack of mic technique), I set up a 2nd mic about 12-18" with a limiter to catch the wild peaks. I just swap in the "belting" parts from that mic. This way you don't need to move mics around and the singer can just concentrate on performance.

I do 1/4-1/2 sec (when that much space is available). So that crappy CD players won't cut off the beginning of the song.

For a smooth sound, I like #1 which I presume to use the ribbon. For a clean sound, I like #6 which I suspect had the burr-brown in the chain. #4 came in a close 2nd for the clean sound, but my ears prefer the low end of #6 (just my preference, but both sound really good).

I'm anxious to find out which ones are using the Firepod pres so that I can have an idea of what mic will work best for the sound I'm after.

What firewire card in in your computer? I have had clocking issues with cheapo firewire cards, but after researching I found that cards with Texas Instruments chipset are the most stable. Once I switched, I haven't had anymore issues...with clocking, that is

Here's something to really get the thinking juices flowing... Although I never actually used this technique for recording, I did experiment and it works. Based on an old technique of placing a bass amp cabinet in front of a bass drum and taking the signal from the moving speaker into a preamp, I tho...

i bet that the percentage of classic upright bass tracks cut with one mic would be somewhere in the vicinity of 100%.... just sayin.... john For old school jazz & classical, you're probably not far off. To my ears they sound like muffled boominess....not what I hear while in the same room as an upr...

I've found two procedures that work really well in most instances, one of which works better than the other in terms of sound and unobtrusiveness, but can lead to difficult bleed issues if there are other instruments in the same room. The other is a decent compromise for that situation. I arrived a...

I record a decent amount of upright bass frequently in a variety of situations: traditional jazz, bluegrass, singer/songwriter, rockabilly, etc. I've seen many, many different ways of recording upright bass and I've tried almost all of them at some point. It's interesting that many of the technique...

HotWired cables (www.hotwired.com) can make most any custom snake you want. And they use all high quality materials. I've been very happy with them.

I was hoping that some company would come out with an 8 track recorder that uses VHS tape. That would be awesome! ADAT? No, ADAT is digital. I'm talking ANALOG. There was that Akai 12-track thing...what was it called? The tapes were proprietary though. Was it the Akai MG1212? There is a thread on t...
