I agree. 24-bit digital feels loose, open and uncontained to me. I think digital sounds like ass, but try telling the industry this. Cheap and affordable wins hands down against sound quality. Ask Joel Hamilton how much he actually rents reels of tape to clients. Uh, can you say "Never" on an annua...

I'm not sure I'm that excited about the rather pedestrian AT 8471, but it sure makes the 4050 a lot easier to use for a lot more purposes, which is a good thing around here.

Here's my take on kick vs. snare: With the overheads, unless you've got a really terrible player, the snare is always going to be louder in the overheads than the kick, right? I mean, come on. Snare wires exciting the high frequency, the top head surface projecting directly up into the mics, as opp...

With tape you sacrifice both. With digital both improve.
Precisely... dynamic range is the enemy. I want to sacrifice it in the way tape does. Tracking and mixing.

The MX5050 series machines are supposed to be set up no higher than +4. ATR is a +10 tape. There's probably no harm in trying out a reel on the MX. I haven't used it on mine, but my impression is that MX machines manage to bias the tape, which would be the first concern. The second concern is that y...

AT8471 stand clamp for AT 4050. Now I don't have to abuse the EV 311 clamp designed for 19mm mikes with the 21mm barrel of the 4050. And it's way less trouble than the standard shockmount for the 4050. Oh, yeah, we just bought a new 3-octave xylophone for my older son, who is starting band soon, as ...

I just bought an old, defunct Peavey combo amp, sans amp chassis and speaker, i.e., it's a closed cabinet for a 12" driver. I saw it in the local repair shop when I took the Traynor tube amps in for a bit of pampering. The guy was using this cab as a test cab. He pulled out his driver and sold me th...

All that said, there's more to gear performance than the bandwidth specs you list. Of course. I just didn't want to belabor the point. My Roland line mixers have excellent audio performance across the board. I used them to mix way back when I had the Otari 4-track and I have even done some recent m...

I guess i actually meant to ask the difference between a line mixer and summing mixer. It seems they do the same thing, but one costs a thousand dollars more. Yep, that's the difference.;) Some summing mixers don't even have make up gain built in (all passive summing is lossy) so you need to invest...

I'm using cubes made with 5" full-range model 11-159 from electronix.com and they are a pretty decent approximation of the Auratone cubes. Unfortunately, they just had a big price hike and they now cost $4.29 each. Still, if you can swing that and have enough spare lumber to make a sealed box with 5...

There's also important, though pedestrian, gear like the Rolls headphone distribution amp But any other box doing the same thing could replace this, no? I mean, nothing particularly precious or spectacular about this, right? Totally. The Studio Traps, SM80 free field omnis and M130 figure 8 symmetr...

Now that I think on it just a tad more, I'd be hard pressed to get by without the DT 770 Ms for tracking. There's also important, though pedestrian, gear like the Rolls headphone distribution amp, the Modutec VU meters strapped to one of the distribution amp's outputs and the custom Shallco monitor ...

Let's see if I make it to ten.

1) ASC Studio Traps
2) M130s
3) SM80s (and the modded SM81s I got from Dorsey)
4) Mackie 1604
5) Mix Pre
6) Otari MKIII 8-track
7) M-23 2-track
8 ) RNC
9) DIY mix cubes
10) KRoks

Yup made it. Last would be DEP-5 to add a bit of reverb.

Cheers,

Otto

The extravagant gear purchase thus far is a pair of 5" full range speakers to build something along the lines of a pair of Auratones.... http://www.electronix.com/25-watt-midrange-speaker-p-13502.html Pretty lofty stuff... nearly $4 per speaker! I've never seen a MTR-90 1" 8 Track headstack, but that would be great to have that and a 2" 24 track headstack! Yeah, if I were to go up to more tracks or wider tape, the MTR-90 would be a good choice: solid sound, lots of machines and parts and relatively recent. I just record my own projects, an...
