Re: connecting turntable to console
I forgot to mention that you could find a receiver for cheap on craigslist or at goodwill and use it as a dedicated phono preamp by connecting the ghost to the tape outs.

Re: connecting turntable to console
+1 to what drumsound said. It'll sound super thin without a phono preamp because of the RIAA curve https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA_equalization . I have an Audio Technica AT-PEQ3 (or maybe a previous generation of the same basic preamp) in my workshop that sounds good, not that I've scrutinized i...

Re: Vocal Mic Bleed
If I have this problem during tracking, I also reach for figure 8s. If there are other instruments to contend with as well, I'll put a gobo on the other side of the mic to protect that side from bleed, and usually have the singer's back up to an absorptive part of the studio wall. in mixing, I usual...

Re: phase alignment and polarity adjustment plugins
I have the hardware and software ibp's, and though I don't use them all that often, when I need them, they're great. There are cheaper options, but since I already had the ibp when the others came along, I haven't tried them. It's easy to go down the rabbit hole when something's just "medium" out of...

Re: Audioscape Opto compressor?
I built a pair of Drip LA2A clones that I love. Bing that they're also PCB LA2As, I expecti it would be similar to the Audioscape. And while I've never used a vintage original, I once A/B'd the UAD LA2A against the clone and I couldn't tell the difference (this was admittedly a quick evaluation with...

Re: Your favorite general use eq plugin
Fabfilter Pro-q 3, mainly for the awesome workflow and GUI. Toneboosters EQ 4 if I need dynamics control as well, and if the Fabfilter GUI wasn't so dang excellent, this might be my only EQ. And so affordable! Just as often, REAPER's ReaEQ for fast, simple uses, especially if I'm nervous about CPU i...

Re: Pro Tools Updated Renewal Pricing
I first tried it out then too, and I remember initially being weirded out by the lack of mouse-tool switching and and the takes system (which improved shortly after I switched). Having tried out several DAWs prior to that, I found the acclimation curve to be rewarding, since every time I learned how...

Re: Pro Tools Updated Renewal Pricing
+1000 for switching to REAPER. Not only is it awesome, super-customizable software, but just as importantly, it is owned by the same small number of people who do the coding. It's a small company who really cares about their customers. In a world full of ruthless software behemoth companies trying t...

Re: Would Dumping from an 8 track repeatedly cause sync issues?
If you were to plan on editing the passes to sync together in the DAW, you could de-PITA-ify that process somewhat by giving up another track to provide an identical click track for each pass. snappy-transient quarter notes would then be very easy to visually or automatically line up in the DAW. You...

Well, there's no point in treating the room if you have no speakers at all, but if you have any speakers at all, then improving your acoustics is job #1. To me, the quality of the gear is way less important than room acoustics.

Yes, I believe you're right. If your calibration tape is +6, set repro to -3 to end up at +3.

Many if not all transistor organs seem to suffer from this symptom. It's because (I think, and pardon my simplification of the process) all 12 oscillators are always on, and pressing a key simply allows the signal to travel to the output. I think that as the components (mainly capacitors) in these o...

You may have tried this/know this already, but for anyone new to DB25 soldering, a fast way to do it is to pre-solder the cups on the connector and re-heating when you put the wire in saves you from needing a third arm to hold the solder. Just make sure you leave the whole thing heated up long enoug...

6 years ago I was discouraged enough by posters here, to not try it. But I wondered if now some developments had made it more feasible. Does that bother you? Sorry, my post came across as snarkier than I intended it. If I had seen this thread back then, I would have said "go for it, it'll probably ...
