doesn't sound to me like his reference to "number 6" is anything important, I think you can just disregard that.

he explains setting the bias with a -6dB signal. it gives you more room on the meter to see where the signal peaks and then starts dropping while adjusting bias level.

From everything I've seen in the manual, it's not possible to make the direct outs pre-fader.

Also the tape returns are +4, so leaving your DAW outputs at +4 should work fine.

the Soundcraft TS24 and TS12 look promising. I'll gladly put in some time with a soldering gun but the MCIs seem like they can turn into a real maintenance nightmare, plus they're probably a bit out of my price range to being with.
