Re: help with studio foam placement
consider your walls as mirrors, and your speakers as flashlights. there are certain points on your walls that will reflect the sound from the speakers directly to your listening chair. deaden those spots with foam. this method ("ray tracing") only works for higher frequencies, but then again the foa...

Re: STILL don't think the media is biased against Bush?
Every time the press repeats some madeup bullshit that McLellan or Cheney or Rumsfeld or even Bush says, they're just doing their job. But when they do some actual work and dig up and report a FACT, they're biased against Bush. I think the problem is clear: the facts are biased against Bush. (Quick,...

Re: Where are all the ladies?
Fortunately, men no longer dominate music. They do still seem to dominate the techie stuff of audio engineering. For whatever reason, men seem to be more drawn to gadgets than women. Why is that? Damned if I know. But I really like gadgets, always have. I especially like the ones that do cool things...

They're amazing, amazing. Amazing. I got to do a couple of songs with them at their Boston (Avalon) show in June. It was cool to play with them, but really, the best part was getting to see the show from the stage. Awesome.

EV ND257/357 - A smooth, warm-sounding vocal or guitar cab mic. Glad to see some votes for the EV ND x57 series. I have a 357, and i like it a lot for clean guitar amps and sometimes lead vocals. Very smooth, warm sound, takes eq well (add some highs sometimes). No thinness or big presence bump lik...

I thought you meant "reflection phase grating." I guess that makes me more of a geek than the D&D guys. Actually I did play D&D a bit as a teen. Yup.

Re: Remembering what you played...
I learned music notation at a young age, but never used it for non-classical music until recently. Boy am i glad i started. Since i've been actually writing things down in musical notation, i remember things much better, even when i don't write them down. I think it's taught me to know what i'm play...

Re: Transducers?
Are you suggesting that you need to be 36.7 feet away from your speakers to hear a 30Hz tone? That's not true. It is true, however, that most rooms will be too small not to make a mess out of these low frequencies.Jeff Robinson wrote:The wavelength of a 30Hz tone is 36.7 feet. Re: monitoring/acoustics questions
It IS possible to flatten the frequency response of a particular monitoring situation IF you know the precise location of the speakers and the listener AND these positions won't change. So, like, don't lean over to tweak a knob or something and expect your EQ room-tuning to still work. The reason fo...

Re: stereo question about rnc
There's no way to unlink the channels either. Having a choice to link/unlink would be very useful, but I wonder if it would drive the price up and knock the RNC out of the "under $200" market. sure thing. they only need one detector and gain reduction circuit this way, they just apply it to both ch...

Re: Transducers?
i don't know about headphones, but... microphones with small diaphragms don't have to be able to produce low frequencies, they just have to be able to react to them, which is much easier. to produce low frequencies, you have to be able to (using just electromagnetism) make something (speaker driver)...

Re: multi track cassette recorder using my own preamp/mixer.
i used to use a tascam 244 with a mackie 1202 for preamps and mixing. I recorded in through the effects returns on the 244, and mixed out from the tape direct outs. Huge improvement over using the built-in preamps and mixer.

Re: Link To Presidential Debates online?
Most of the major news outlets have them archived for watching on video. Nytimes.com, cspan.org, msnbc.com... Please watch! These were good debates, in my opinion. Real issues, real contrast. (Transcripts are available too.)

Re: MIC Review: PPA LD-2ube
For those of you with a cassette 4-track and dynamic mics, I'd recommend stepping up. I agree that condensors, even bad ones, are often a better match with 4track cassette recording. A lot of this is just because they have a hotter output, and the preamps on the 4track aren't up to the task of ampl...
