Hey Man, I think the instruments sound great and it's a nice mix. For my taste the vocals are a bit loud or stick out from the instrumetns a liitle too much. Just my 2 cents though! Great tune though. Speaking of Tropicalia, have you heard the newest Caetano Veloso album. The song Outro blows my mi...

I might be in the minority, but I found Old Joy painful. No script--just stiff, awkward improv. Or at least that's how it felt to me. It kind of worked in that the characters didn't seem like real friends, the space between them being the point, if you can say the movie had a point. At least it was ...

I Wanna Die, a tropicalia-ish tune by I Come to Shanghai

We're pretty happy with the way this one turned out, for once. Have a listen: http://public.box.net/robertashley36658 (You can either click the song title to download or stream it by clicking the speaker icon) What do you think? Background: Recorded, primarily, in the bedroom area of my loft using a...

I gotta say, I like the super roomy drums quite a bit. The snare decay is bonkers. Song-wise, it's a total cock tease when it starts to get dance-able (with that little funk guitar riff), but then falls back apart. Less art, more ass shaking!

Thanks for the responses. Sears: The end of the song fits directly into a related song, which we will record sometime in 2009 at the rate we're going. Do the vocals fit in the mix nicely? We kept them pretty dry, and sometimes the lead feels like it sticks out. But I no longer have the ability to he...

Buy an 80 gig and rip MP3's at 320 (so you don't get trapped into the Apple system). I've got about 700 albums on mine. Any slightly diminished sound quality is greatly compensated for by the convenience of carrying your entire music library in your pocket.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I dig Neon Bible way more than Funeral. It's more subtle, less angsty adolescent, and waaaay less painfully white.

Country-fied Brian Eno recorded at home

Please have a listen to our newly finished, new song of unbearable newness: Salvation is a Country Club. Our group is called I Come to Shanghai, and the song is, unfortunately, posted on our MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/trainsacrossthesea . Please use the Download option to avoid aural dog a...

FWIW, I've got a Soundblaster Audigy 2 card (specs availavble on wikipedia) that I'm not using. I'd donate it to the cause, and that would help bring the total down. Just lemme know. Thanks for the generous offer, Alex. Does this card have an XLR input? I went ahead and got him Acid, and now I'm ju...

Case?

I picked one of these up last week, and I'd like to take home with me to get some music fun in durring our Christmas vacation. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with a case, and they don't appear to sell one. Has anyone found a usable substitute?

Thanks for all the input. There are some cool suggestions here. The Tracktion bundle sounds like a good deal, though I'm just not sure this particular kid is ready for relying on his own musicianship. He's a a dabbler, and it doesn't seem like he's caught that all important passion for learning an i...

Affordable software for a 15-year-old to explore

For Christmas, my wife and I would like to buy our nephew an affordable (read: under $100) looping/recording program that he can use on his PC (a decent, PC gaming rig from a couple of years back). He plays a little piano and a little guitar, but I'm thinking what would hook him would be the ability...
