Re: Damnit Nigel...

Radiohead is a "now' kind of band. Clipped digital reverb is a "now" kind of sound (probably most people have never heard it before) Same as the Beatles running a vocal through a Leslie, or experimenting with over-the-top tape flanging, or same as Les Paul doing overdubs, or Eddie Van Halen buying a...

Re: Favourite Guitar Soundzz

My basic sound is a Gibson Les Paul Custom thru a Music Man 2-12. The best tone I ever got in the studio was through a really old Fender Champ, cranked with an SM57 in front of it. I've become a big fan of the "use a small amp in the studio" philosophy. I think they really do sound bigger. - Definit...

Re: Weather and sounds

Conversely, if you go down to Jamaica, it is humid and hot 85% of the year. Intonation is affected, it is difficult to keep stringed instruments and pianos in tune. Drum heads lose their tautness and expand to create a loose and boxy quality. The faster and smaller waves of treble vibrations are los...

Re: Your favorite music you might not want anyone.....

There was a great article I read one time (can't remember where) about records that you keep in your collection with the spines facing the other way so people won't be able to read them. Too bad you can't do that with CDs! I knew a guy who had a knack for taking what most hipsters would consider to ...

Favorite/Great Recordings...with a drum machine...

What are your favorite recordings or songs that use a drum machine? There was a great thread a while ago about Sly Stone's "There's A Riot Goin' On" that mentioned the cheesy drum machine, and then there was another good thread about which drum machine was best to buy for home recording, then there ...

Re: backmasking

One thing I learned years and years ago from experimenting with flipping the cassette over in a four-track, is that the bit in "Revolution #9" on the White Album ("Number Nine, Number Nine, Number Nine") really DOES freaking sound like he's saying "Turn me on, dead man, turn me on, dead man." I mean...

Re: musical dreams

I am not one to trip out on stuff like this, but I am not making this up...when I was about 17 or 18 I had a dream, that Jimi Hendrix didn't die and I was there in some tricked-out '70s recording studio, watching him record through the glass. I wasn't actually doing anything, just watching and liste...

Re: Baba O'Riley

Check out this link for a detailed examination of the sounds on "Baba O' Reily" and "Won't Get Fooled Again." http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/equip-baba.htm I obviously don't have any of this gear but it sounds like this guy has really done his homework. He even tells you what other Lowrey organ model...

Inexpensive Keyboard Rig for Home Recording -- Ideas???

After years of 4-tracking, I just upgraded my "home studio" setup a little bit, and after years of being primarily a guitar player who occasionally borrowed keyboards from friends, I am now looking for advice or recommendations on a good cheap or used keyboard rig to add a little more texture to my ...

Re: Guitar Tips and Tricks

This is gonna sound kinda sophomoric, and a potential can of worms, but... try temporarily trading gear with a buddy you can trust. One thing I often do when I get in a playing rut, is rather than spend $900 on a new guitar or $150 on an effects box, I just temporarily trade a piece or two of gear w...
