Re: monitoring in a garage studio

I've got a one room setup, for the most part. Although we can move certain things around to other rooms, we usually just record in the one room. Anyway, I built a few gobos that I can put around certain things like guitar amps, etc. That way I can at least position mics and sort of hear what's comin...

Re: I Don't think I'm even DREAMING of a Neumann U47 anymore

i agree wholeheartedly with you guys about the soundelux mics being great mics. But, they aren't cheap mics. I'm looking at my Sweetwater cat now.... E47 $3555, ELUX251 $4500, ifet7 $1890...the cheapest one is the U195fet at $1215. I realize this is less than a vintage neumann, but it's really not a...

Re: How was James Jamerson's bass recorded?

I have a B15 from I believe 65. It's got a JBL in it and has the most amazing sound ever. It's got the growl of an SVT, but in a smaller 50ish watt amp. Incredible in the studio...and live for smaller gigs. I highly recommend tracking one down for your bass rig in a studio. Also, since it's got a si...

Re: Outboard gear with a DAW.

The Mackie's are ok, but if you don't mind used, look for something like a Soundcraft 200 series board. It's got decent mic pres and the eq is very useful. I've been seeing 16 channel boards go for around $500-600.

Re: help me spend 5 g's on outboard gear!!!

What Stapes said.... I've got a Vintech 1272 and it's amazing on kick, snare and guitars, but far from transparent. I don't really even try it on vocals, unless using a dynamic mic. I just noticed someone, I believe on the "buy/sell" forum here at tapeop, selling a UA 1176 for $1000. You should defi...

Re: I Don't think I'm even DREAMING of a Neumann U47 anymore

That's what bothers me with all the clone or reissue mics....they all sound brighter. I sorta don't want that. Not in every single mic anyway. It seems like that's all there is to choose from.
For the price, I'm sure I'll get a 4047 though one of these days.

Re: help me spend 5 g's on outboard gear!!!

$5000. Here's the breakdown.
two 1176's. OK, spend the rest on API or better yet, OSA mic pres in a lunchbox.
That was easy.

Re: I Don't think I'm even DREAMING of a Neumann U47 anymore

I'm primarily a drummer, as my main instrument, so I always gravitate towards the mics that work on drums. An U47fet being the pinnacle of kick drum micing. But, come on....that kind of money for a kick mic? I'm happy with my RE20, D112 and MD421 for now. But, given that there are plenty of 47 clone...

Re: Acoustic Foam

I don't work there or have any affiliations, but I've ordered a bunch of different foam products from www.foambymail.com and it's really cheap and very well made. Also, most importantly, these days, is that it's flame proof...or it meets fire codes. That's a better way to put it. Anyway, I've ordere...

Re: Do y'all run outboard pre straight to recorder?

I agree that the shortest possible route to the recorder is best, but there are times when I have to go through the console. Sometimes I really want to push some of my pres, like Neves or API types, to get a really aggressive sound. Well, it's just too much for the input of the recorder. It's nice t...

Re: Fender Amp

Yeah, I've owned, and still have a ton of vintage Fenders and also some of the new ones. I like the newer Deluxes ok, but I really think that the best new amp that Fender has done in the past 10 or so years is the original Blues Deville 4x10....not the hot rod or anything else that they have now. FW...

Re: Fender Amp

If I had $1400 to get a Fender, I'd look out for a used Blues DeVille 4x10 for about $400 and put the $1000 in the bank for something down the road. I do agree with other postings about the Bassman. I have a 66 blackface that I got for around $300 and a matching and correct 66 2x12 cabinet that soun...

Re: Brent Averill 1272 DIFFERENCE

The Vintech's are great. They do sound different than the BA models. The BA models are very, very dark. The Vinnies are a bit less dark, but still have that Neve sound. I LOVE mine on kick and snare. Also guitar amps. For these 3 things, I've just about stopped trying other options...no matter which...
