I am really loving what Focal has to offer. Their Alpha50's are really close to my CMS-50 [at almost $700 bones less!!!] So a lot of clients are digging them for the project setups at home,

Re: Purple TAV vs API 560 on bass drum?

I've always liked the API 560 on bass drum, a little 36Hz, cut out some 500Hz, add a little 4K and boom modern bass drum sound. But, I'm wondering how the TAV compares. I wouldn't mind something a little "softer" or "rounder" sounding, but still really tight in the low end. The TAV is exactly that....

Love Ribbons on gtrs! Most of them have some extreme proximity, which is cool - You can back it off the cab, get alotta air and OOOOMPH around the sound. So I tend to use them in mid distance, but some can be jammed up closer and still sound great. I think you lose a little bit of highs when they ar...

It is usual for a console's monitor section to connect the monitors, and one would patch the Master Mix Outputs into the AD converter, and monitor the Return DA converter to the console's 2-track return, resulting signal flowing towards the monitor section of the console. However, if you are not usi...

I don't think your commentary is likely to be helpful to those seeking advice about the compressor's actual operation. I sell Empirical Labs products, yes. I believe they make excellent products as Dave has very smart design goals. Don't you modify them for a price? Perhaps we are both at odds here....

Re: my oh my my

Jim loves beating up the EL8's "spec's". I guess it's because he hasn't found any applications to use one. I gather from his specification analyzation that he thinks it sounds bad. Specs do tell a story, but the ears tell me it's not something I would select unless I wanted to "ugly-fy" a track. Be...

Re: Airy mic to compliment SM7b and vintage U87 for vocals?

Blackspace UM25 here is an example of this mic on acoustic, to give you an idea of it's tonal quality https://soundcloud.com/dspdoctor-llc/blackspade-um25 For $1,899 it is a fantastic option for a sweetly bright and clear microphone with smooth mojo. I favor the premium version, with a European mad...

(Attn: A.B., I'll probably be giving you guys a call. I hope you have time to talk, as I have many questions about many things) Hey Dino, sure thing! All of us here at the Doc's office are "alpha" gear geeks, and honestly we love questions, and evaluating problems that need solving...cause we think...

I think it's pretty rad. I mean, I can make it work just fine as a clean compressor for tracking and for mixing. You ju...

UAD Apollo DUO

For 2K the UAD Apollo DUO is a great option for a 8x8 ADA Interface. It is high quality product and value for what you get. It adds UAD Processing along to a fully featured interface for both Mac and Windows OS.

adding more I/O to the apollo

I dig your idea in adding I/O here. The RME boxes are good options for this. But I think the A2D has really nice converters in it. Who can't use another pair of awesome 312's? And you've got output trims before the AD too. And you can insert gear after the mic preamp and before the Converters. Or yo...

Why not call Greg and ask him how he built his box yourself? Better than asking the "mirror mirror on the wall"... I'd bet he will be happy to tell you in great detail. If you buy one you will get the schematic. I hope the phone lines don't explode from the heavy tech talk....
