Hey, thanks Brian and Ned for the help here. I'm going to pick up a few variable resistors tonight and do brian's trick to check input Z. I do have a tone generator so I'll post back with values for 100Hz, 1K and 10K. Also, the design of this is motherboard-with-cards, so tracing the input circuitry...

It sounds ok and has plenty of gain if I plug a 58 into it. Before I drop $60/channel into some Jensens, naturally I'd like to know if I should get a unity or a step-up.

Can I test the existing impedance just by putting VOM on the input?

Also, in the Remo line there are 3 primary weights for the single ply heads(light to heavy): Diplomat, Ambassador and Emperor. Diplomat is a good weight for brush or light stick work, but they dent up easily. Emperor is really durable, but the heavy weight can choke the tone. If you want really heav...

Fiberskyns were made to emulate calfskin heads, but sort have their own unique sound. Compared to an ambassador coated, attack is de-emphasized, as are overtones. However, it would still be considered a more "live" head than a pinstripe. They also have a little softer "give" than mylar heads. In the...

I've been a bit swamped with work and haven't had time to dig through my files for any Mk 1 info. Wasn't that the 2 piece unit, typically in "suitcase" type packaging? Bri It is 2 units: a transport section and an electronics section, both about 8U tall. Not sure about the suitcase packaging, as mi...

Ok, this totally rules, thank you for the reply. The mic ins are definitely 1/4" UNbalanced. I don't have the schematic (am trying to get a manual for this - anyone??) but the pres have good gain running them with dynamic mics. Am still building out the +48 supply, so I haven't tried condensers with...

I'm currently making an external +48 supply from the schematic on Eddie Ciletti's site. Will post pics when I'm done. It's in a sweet plastic case. I think there's room in the electronics themselves to put a little card with a balancing xformer. It would be real nice if someone had a recommendation ...

I just got this one on the recommendation of other tape oppers. works well and the pice is right. I'd recommend getting a couple extra tips while you're at it, and at a slightly smaller size than the standard tip.

Does it have to be pretty?

I'd personally cannibalize one of those little hoop-style pop filters and rig it up with rubber bands and tape as a ghetto shock-mount.

The first gen 5050s actually do have legit mic pres in them. They also have XLR line-ins and there are separate pots to control each. I realize it's weird that the mic inputs are 1/4" and the line ins are XLR, but this is also the unit with the pin-3-hot anomaly, so not much is gonna surprise me! AN...

Souping up mic pres in Otari 5050 (Mk I)

Hi, I have an old 5050 1/2" 8 track and would like to take advantage of its build in mic pres, essentially running through it to a DAW. I have two questions: First, the existing mic inputs are 1/4", but I'd like to make them balanced XLR. I'm assuming all I need to do is locate a 1:1 mic input trans...

I agree! I often think about how useless all my audio shit is without power. Electric guitars and amps too. Not to hijacke the thread with OT stuff - but I think the biggest thing all of take for granted is the electrical grid - without it none of our studios (unless you're cutting wax cylinders wi...

I think the song sounds pretty good, but I agree that the vocals need a bit of ambience. Don't be afraid to lay on some more 'verb. Were the vocals recorded sepearately with the singer monitoring through headphones? If so, you could try having him just monitor through speakers if he is going to red...

I think the big issue here is matching stick weight to head and cymbal weight. You're gonna annihilate that A Custom Fast Crash with repeated bashings with 2Bs (and it probably won't sound very good in the process). Similarly, those 7As aren't going to have the mass to make that Evans Hydraulics on ...
